After their shifts end, they come here and train the next generation for free.

At Old Fire Station 46 on Vernon Avenue in South Los Angeles, members of the Stentorians volunteer their nights preparing future firefighters for the job. City and County firefighters teach candidates the skills, discipline and expectations of the fire service.

The Stentorians were founded in Los Angeles in 1954, 72 years ago, in response to racism, segregation and the social and economic injustices Black firefighters faced in the fire service. Their mission continues today through recruitment, retention, mentorship and advancement of African Americans in the profession.

In 1980, the Stentorians moved into the former Fire Station 46 at 1409 W. Vernon Avenue. More than four decades later, it remains a place where that mission becomes tangible: experienced firefighters giving their own time to prepare the people coming behind them.

This is what the pipeline actually looks like.

The Color of Fire: Los Angeles.
31,000 miles. The Color of Fire overall has over 1.3 million views on social media. One firehouse at a time.

When I woke up this morning I thanked God for blessing me to see another day, but also when I woke up I decided to do something different on this day. It’s Ash Wednesday of course but most people are giving something up for 40 days and 40 nights. Well me it’s what I’m giving myself and that’s the drive to start pushing myself to hit the gym so I can see another day another week and another year, but I’m also giving up something fried foods, fast foods and sodas. I’m focused on getting my weight down and to get my blood pressure back to normal. So let my cuz/bro @iamharper said let’s 🪓🪵 and have a great day #LetsGeaux

🔥 Built Different. Ready for Service. 🔥

With over 60 candidates in our Future Firefighter Program, the talent runs deep. One of our members stepped up to capture promo footage that gives a real glimpse into what this program is about.

Last week, our candidates logged 60+ volunteer hours during the Toy Giveaway push, working at both Toy Central and the Stentorians Center. High stress, last-minute changes, no excuses. They showed up and delivered.

This is just a sneak peek of a promo video created by one of our own. Proud of this group. More to come.
