Time capsule: 🕰️ In 2013, The Nassau Guardian announced the Popop Junior Residency Prize, awarded to the most promising fine artists studying at the University of The Bahamas. Kachelle Knowles and Giovanna Swaby were described as “[…] the youngest and brightest artists in the country,” by John Cox, the founder of PopopStudios, also former art professor at UB who inspired many of the artists that Lauren and I work with at TERN today.

John and I go back a ways and when I went back home to lead the National Art Gallery of the Bahamas in 2011, he was my immediate pick as Chief Curator at the start of 2012. In 2013, we were smack in the middle of our time at NAGB and I remember these fresh artists so very well. It’s been such a joy to watch them grow and expand into the incredible artists and women they are today, we are all in awe of them and we’re so chuffed that this booth at The Armory Show is the first time they’ve shown together in a 2-person since then! Here are some snapshots from our history together, through various shows and haircuts.

p.s. Gio’s partner Steven Schmid features in these often, proud to say TERN also represents Steven and even happier to say they’re engaged!

1 – 2026 The Armory Gang (booth F8)

2 – 2013 Era (Popop Forever!) ✌️

3 – 2016 Steven and Gio on my former weekly radio show “NAGB’s Blank Canvas” during their inclusion in the 8th National Exhibition 🇧🇸

4 – 2019 KK and Richardo Barrett on the show for their two solos: KK in the NAGB’s project space and Chardo’s at Central Bank of The Bahamas gallery. 5 & 6 – KK giving a tour of the NAGB show “Bahamian Man From Time” which closed a week later to become a donation centre after the passage of the catastrophic Hurricane Dorian. 🌀

7 - 2021 OG Terrific Team TERN with LP, Jodi and our wee-eye-pee guests visiting from Canada.🇨🇦

8 – 2023 Gio and Steven visiting brother Heino (another TERN artist! We family, ay!) at Untitled Miami 🌊

9 – 2024 KK and I playing tourist in Nassau for the day 🚢

10 – Finally, both Schmid brothers will be married 💍 to two beautiful TERN gallery artists ✨. Yes, TERN is also a matchmaking company. As Lenny said: Let Love Rule! ❤️

Another wonderful aspect to The Bahamas Pavilion in Venice was being able to broaden the horizons or ambitions of several young Bahamians by providing them the opportunity to experience Venice first-hand.

Eddion Whyms, an emerging artist working in Nassau, was supported by Central Bank of The Bahamas to travel, live and work in Venice for 3 months, alongside Lavar and the team. His were the very first boots on the ground, as he travelled ahead with Lavar to start the work on the stunning installation “However Long the Night, The Dawn Will Break” (commission support by VIA Art Fund).

Eddion experienced all the aspects of producing a pavilion from making the work, planning logistics, packing and unpacking, and installing. He was there to assist Lavar, observe how Dr Thompson put the show together, and was on the inside of every decision. From using a table saw, to creating parts of the installation, to giving guided tours, to even bartending, Eddion was an integral part of the pavilion’s success and we all raise our spritz glasses to Eddion for his work and commitment. 🥂

Our CEO spent an afternoon immersed in Bahamian art and culture at The Current Gallery and ECCHO Art Museum in Nassau, learning more about FUZE, the annual celebration of Bahamian and Caribbean art, culture, and culinary creativity.

The visit also sparked exciting conversations around potential cross-cultural collaboration and creative exchange with Artscape and SCOUT—exploring new ways to connect Baltimore’s creative community with artists and cultural leaders across the Caribbean.

Baltimore to The Bahamas—and beyond. 🌎

🇧🇸 As Bahamians—from an archipelago that most people cannot even find on a map– we are always extremely proud to show the world what we are capable of. ✨ Touring visitors from all over the world around our pavilion has been an outstanding experience.

However, there’s a particularly special emotion in seeing the reactions of our fellow countrymen and women. Whether they have visited us intentionally or happened upon us during their summer explorations, it’s always been a proud moment. There was always something electric about hearing a chorus of Bahamian accents filling the space.

Here are some adventurous folks—from young artists fresh off a Florentine residency (Keith and Amaani) and their patrons (Miranda and friends); to high school, university and PhD students (Story, Emmy and Simone, who interned for us and experienced living and working in Venice); from supporters and sponsors who flew in for the celebration (Bryan, Tracie, Jason and Melinda) to people just on their summer holidays, here are some of their comments from our visitors book.

We hope to see more of you—whether from home or elsewhere—come visit between now and the exhibition’s closing on November 22.
