Respect is vital in a thriving marriage. In fact, most men would tell you that being respected is at the top of the list for them.

If you don’t have respect for your spouse it will show up in every interaction that you have with them.

Married households are down to 47.1% compared to 78.8% in 1949. Respect for marriage as a whole has gone down.

We are surrounded by a culture that often doesn’t value marriage and the belief around marriage being important has decreased significantly.

Marriage is valuable, sacred and deserves honor and respect. It’s imperative that we are guarding our hearts and our minds when it comes to what we are thinking and allowing to influence our marriage.

Your marriage is going to go through tough seasons.

Who you surround yourself with and trust to speak into your marriage can make all the difference.

If they aren’t going to encourage you and speak truth, don’t talk to them about your spouse. Period. Don’t allow toxic talk to take place about your spouse.

In a season where Brittany was struggling with her mental health, I had to make sure I was surrounding myself with people who would speak life over us, pray for us and encourage us to get to the other side.

Who is in your corner? Make sure they want to see your marriage THRIVE and have you and your spouses best interest at heart. And if they don’t…bye. 👋🏼

Just because someone agrees with you doesn’t mean it’s the truth.

It’s easy to surround ourselves with people who validate our frustrations, especially when it comes to our spouse.

But when we only share the negative, we’re inviting people to form opinions about a marriage they don’t fully understand.

And sometimes, we’re not even looking for advice. We’re looking for someone to tell us we’re right.

There’s a big difference between seeking wise counsel and seeking validation.

Your marriage doesn’t need more people taking sides. It needs people who will speak truth, challenge your perspective, and encourage you to fight FOR each other.

Before you share your frustrations, ask yourself: Am I looking for wisdom or just validation?

In this podcast episode we talk all about marriage mindset and how to shift what you think about your marriage and spouse to align with truth.

Honestly, I think he has spent half of our marriage in the bathroom.

You want a better intimate life with your spouse and don’t know where to start. It begins with improving communication.

Sounds simple, we know, but think about this. When you and your spouse are always arguing, not having deep conversations, and you don’t know what is going on in your spouses mind, your intimacy lacks.

Communication = Connection

Today, look your spouse in the eye and check in on them. Set aside an intentional time to listen to them and see where they are at. No strings attached, just a bridge to start building connection.

If you want a better marriage, become an expert communicator.

Want an amazing marriage? Become an expert in your spouse’s communication style and needs.

Maybe your problem isn’t a talking problem. Maybe it’s a listening problem.

There’s a reason the Bible says, “Be quick to listen, slow to speak…”

So often, we’re so desperate to be heard that we forget to actually hear.

Your spouse doesn’t just want you to listen to their words. They want you to hear what they’re trying to tell you. Because behind their words is a heart, and learning to understand that heart will change the way you communicate with each other.

Husbands, your wife desperately wants to be heard. Want to make her day? Listen to her. Not while you’re scrolling. Not while you’re formulating your response. Listen to understand her.

Improving communication will inevitably improve so many areas of your marriage.

Trust us—we’ve been bad at it, and we’ve been good at it.

Life is wayyyy better when it’s good.

It’s not your fault.

You need to hear that first.

You didn’t cause them to do this. It’s not something you did or didn’t do that made them choose to betray your marriage.

What your spouse did is their responsibility.

That doesn’t mean you won’t have some deep work to do within yourself.

You’ve experienced a deep wound, and healing from it takes time. Things may come up in you that you didn’t even know were there—fear, insecurity, anger, anxiety, questions, triggers, or a need for reassurance.

That doesn’t mean you’re broken.

It means you’ve been hurt.

And while their choices are theirs to own, your healing is yours to pursue with God by your side.

Give yourself permission to heal without taking responsibility for what wasn’t yours to carry in the first place.

Nothing is worth keeping if it’s going to lead you into a place where you betray your marriage.

Something that seems small or innocent in the moment can turn into something else if you don’t shut the door.

Don’t leave room for something to happen.

Instagram DMs. Facebook messages. Flirty conversations with someone who isn’t your spouse. Whatever it is—cut it off and stop before it’s too late.

And if you’re already in a place where you’ve stepped over the line and you’re rebuilding trust, ask your spouse what they need you to get rid of.

Maybe it’s a person. Maybe it’s an app. Maybe it’s a certain friendship, environment, or boundary that no longer has a place in your marriage.

Don’t hold onto something that is standing in the way of rebuilding what you say you want to save.

Protect your marriage before you have something to repair.
