Departing Kigali for now but will soon be back! A big thank you to our new Kigali community. This group of amazing humans gave us royal treatment during our 2 week stay in the land with a thousand hills. Through them our Kigali experience was absolutely stellar. Not to mention how they all showed up for James’s 60th birthday celebration ❤️. Thank you! It meant the world to both of us. Also thank you to those that connected us to these people. Our network is strong☺️. Until next time 💚#cleangreenandserene

🇷🇼 What is it REALLY like to leave the U.S. and build a life in Rwanda? 🇷🇼

Meet Autumn Marie Faraj (@iamstagram) one of our
ExodUS Summit 2026 speakers.

After 15 years working in PR, marketing and entertainment in New York City, Autumn Marie relocated to East Africa in 2018 and built a new life and a business in Kigali, Rwanda.

At ExodUS Summit, Autumn Marie is giving us a look at what daily life in Rwanda is actually like.

We’re talking cost of living, healthcare, building community, navigating cultural differences, running a business and what she’s learned as a Black American woman living on the African continent.

If Rwanda has been on your move abroad list or you’ve been curious about what your life could actually look like there you’ll want to be in this session.

❤️🖤💚 As we close out another Black August… what did we actually learn?

What did the focus on studying give us? What did the fasting show us about ourselves? Did the training sharpen the sword and remind us that WE are the ultimate weapon?

Don’t get it twisted, we’re in a fight. But the month ending doesn’t end the work. We carry that discipline into September, the rest of the year & however long it takes.

The OG’s that are no longer with us left us more than history. They left us instructions. We honor them by continuing the work.

And there are STILL political prisoners. Say their names. Support them. What’s the call?…FREE ’EM ALL. ✊🏾

What jewel are you carrying forward from this Black August? ⚠️

Who gets to define Africa’s global narrative?

At the 2026 PR Power List Soirée & Awards, @iamstagram challenged the way we measure success in African storytelling: are we trying to reach platforms that were never built with us in mind, or are we recognising the power of telling our stories to, and for ourselves?

As she puts it, “we are the global stage and we are the future.”

It’s been 9 years since my last #NABJ convention and it exceeded my expectations. Grateful for the time spent reconnecting IRL with long time fam, and making new connections. Love seeing how we’ve all grown, how we’re moving and shaking, and navigating this insane industry. Left feeling full and really inspired. 🙏🏽

🧐🤔 Every year around this time I realize how many people have never heard of Black August.
No shame if that’s you. Truth is… a lot of people haven’t.

Then there are those who’ve heard a lil’ somethin’ in passing but think it’s basically Black History Month… just in August. Nope. It ain’t that.

Black August isn’t a holiday or a celebration.
It’s a month of remembrance… a commemoration, if you will.

It began inside California prisons in 1979 to honor political prisoners, freedom fighters & those who sacrificed in the struggle for liberation.
At the heart of that history is George Jackson…author, revolutionary, Black Panther & one of the Soledad Brothers. His life, writings, and death became a defining inspiration behind Black August.
(If u haven’t read Soledad Brother yet… this might be a good time. Great read.)

The tradition continues through four simple principles:

Fast. Study. Train. Fight.

Fast… because discipline starts with ourselves & a good ol’ hard reset is always a good thing.

Study… because ignorance serves the system. More importantly, you can’t change what you don’t understand.

Train… your mind, your body, and your spirit. We are the weapon. Sharpen your sword.

Fight… because freedom has never simply been handed to oppressed people. It’s always been organized, demanded, defended, and fought for. As Malcolm X famously said, “by any means necessary.” And when we say fight, don’t reduce that to just physical confrontation. Art is a weapon. Education is a weapon. Organization is a weapon. Community is a weapon. Every act that pushes back against ignorance, injustice, complacency, and oppression is part of the struggle.

Whether you’ve observed Black August for years or you’re just learning about it today, take some time this month to read something. Learn something. Sharpen yourself. Challenge yourself.

Remember the people who came before us… especially the political prisoners whose sacrifices we continue to build on as we push toward true liberation.

If today is your introduction to Black August… welcome.

Now go study.

Have u observed Black August before? If so, how are you honoring it this year?
