American Blonde - “Kiss Me Like The World Is Ending”

If the world is ending, American Blonde’s “Kiss Me Like the World Is Ending” makes a persuasive case for going out with a little style. From their latest release, Delta Home, the tune takes the familiar prospect of doomsday and gives it a distinctly Southern, sun-drenched makeover. There is doom and gloom in the lyrics, certainly, but you would hardly know it from the music. This is a groovy, lighthearted slow burn, with just enough coy sensuality to suggest that Armageddon might actually be rather enjoyable given the right company. At the center of it all is Nata Morris, whose smoky, sultry vocal delivery gives the track its knowing wink. She never oversells the coquettishness. Instead, she lets it simmer, sounding as though she has already decided that if the sky is falling, there are more interesting things to worry about than the sky. The arrangement is where the track positively shines. Lead guitar and Fender Rhodes engage in a wonderfully elastic call and response, passing melodic ideas back and forth while Morris glides through the middle. The effect is simultaneously relaxed and sophisticated, with the two instruments providing a kind of musical flirtation of their own. Soul supplies the warmth, Southern Rock supplies the grit, and the whole concoction carries unmistakable Delta flavor. It is a tasty musical gumbo, equal parts groove, swagger, sweetness and heat. Most importantly, the song understands that its cataclysmic premise is really an excuse to celebrate the present. The world may be ending, but the mood is decidedly not. “Kiss Me Like the World Is Ending” is less interested in catastrophe than chemistry, and American Blonde wisely keeps the latter simmering rather than setting it ablaze. If tomorrow truly is the end, this is one soundtrack that knows exactly what to do tonight: turn up the music, lean a little closer, and make the apocalypse wait its turn.
