About 14 years ago, I was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. And not long after, psoriatic arthritis. PsA is an autoimmune type of arthritis that, in my case, affects my spine and sacroiliac joints - well, pretty much every large joint as a result - and my connective tissue. I’m in pain all day every day, and I’m usually dealing with some sort of injury. So I have to exercise in order to mitigate that pain and keep my body mobile.

It’s confusing, I’m sure, especially to people who don’t have arthritis or experience chronic pain. “How can you do all this handstand stuff if you have arthritis? You can’t be THAT bad.” Yes, I can stand on my hands. But no, I can’t stand on line to board an airplane. Or wait for a table at a restaurant. Getting in and out of a car, standing up, sitting down, bending over, going up and down stairs, opening a jar of jam, looking behind me, traveling, even sleeping - just to name a few mundane things - all come with difficulty. And with the exception of my husband, people have no concept of what I push through just to get through any given day.

But the one thing I must do is exercise. And I like to do badass stuff and learn badass skills. So here’s where @willspacenyc enters the chat. That place is like no other gym or studio I’ve ever been to. It’s not yoga or Pilates or barre. It’s a movement gym. What we do there makes me feel healthy, accomplished and proud. It makes me forget my age, my pain, and my arthritis. It is my therapy - both mental and physical. And the team there is making my badass dreams come true - which right now, is to do handstands.

So that’s what all this handstand stuff is about… It’s something I’m super proud of, and last summer I decided to low-key share it here, also with the intention of tracking my progress. And who knows, maybe along the way I can inspire someone else who struggles with something similar. Our bodies are capable of more than we think. And it is such an incredible feeling to say that I CAN do something that is totally badass. Because I’m so used to saying, “sorry, I can’t.”
