Happy birthday @stephenjonesmillinery ! Photographed for issue one by @rachelbyrnestudio and interviewed by @ian_luka “I knew that I had some sort of talent to do something… not even just to create something. It’s starting from very small beginnings. I knew that I was good at art. I understood about colour and proportion and texture. I knew music, which was maybe even more important to me than knowing fashion. But to me, the worlds of music and fashion were so completely interlinked. What were my influences back then? It was Roxy Music, Bryan Ferry and David Bowie. And, you know, were they more important for their visuals, or more important for their music? I don’t really know. And, certainly, as a 17 year old or 18 year old, and in the days before the internet and easy dissemination of visuals, music was the thing with which you communicated. @foundandvision is this decades’ Rellik - the go to place for vintage fashion not only for the general public wanting one-of-a-kind find, but also designers like Phoebe Philo or Jean Paul Gaultier looking for inspiration. And @karenclarkson is one of the masterminds behind it. Ian Luka: What’s the best/ craziest find you’ve had? Karen Clarkson: Straight away, I can tell you the answer to that. It was a Judy Blame beret and it was at a Battersea car boot sale. You know what it’s like at a car boot sale, everything looks like junk. It was a table that was actually very Judy Blame, bottle tops and junk. But there was a black beret with bottle tops and cork and pins hanging off it. And anyone else would’ve walked past thinking it’s just a lot of trash on the table. But I saw it and immediately knew it was Judy Blame. IL: Did they know it was Judy Blame? KC: Well, I paid £30 for it. Afterwards I posted it on Instagram and Judy liked it so that was the confirmation although I never had any doubt in my mind. You can tell, it’s so genius. That was one of my favourite fun finds. And I sold it to Jeremy Scott. I’ve put it on Twigs, she wore it, it went out to various editorials and then Jeremy Scott came to the shop. I didn’t want to sell it but he wanted it, and then he did a whole collection for menswear and brought Judy Blame in to consult. And it came from Jeremy finding the hat, buying it, reaching out to Judy. So I feel like I had a part to play. IL: You definitely had a part to play! You started the whole chain of events. And that’s what people often miss about vintage - it’s not just about getting nice things from the past but also all the stories from the past and starting new stories. “Fashion should just be an element of life that’s pure fun and joy and pleasure. And I don’t want to be in environments that feel snobby, or unwelcoming. In a way our shop, and the way the shop looks, how colourful I made it with the yellow floor and the pink and blue walls - which was inspired by a David Hockney painting - I wanted it to just feel welcoming. I can’t be too cool.” Well, we love the sentiment but we beg to disagree on one account - @karenclarkson is definitely very cool. For issue one, we chatted to her about creating definitive pop moments through styling the likes of FKA twigs, Christina Aguilera or Rita Ora (who could forget the bathrobe dress from the 2017 MTV EMAs or the 12 outfit changes that followed?); founding the number one vintage store in London; school runs that end in styling Hailey Bieber and finding fashion Holy Grails at car boot sales.
