I’m currently working on an ongoing archive project looking at the independent fashion scene in Nottingham during the 1980s, this will form the next Vitrines exhibition @boningtongallery (opening March 21 - come!). As part of this I received a stack of ‘Déspatch’ & ‘Relay’ which were fashion/style focussed magazines in Nottingham during the 1980s.

What feels impressive when looking through them (beyond the fact they existed in the first place, the g-design & photography, + the quality & independent vision of Nottingham designers themselves) was the editorial confidence, resourcefulness and discernment to identify broader designers and ‘trends’ before/as they broke in London and elsewhere in the UK, plus the instinct to secure interviews and editorial with other important figures and [sub]cultural outputs of that time, who I guess placed importance on interacting with regional press of that moment. The overall effect was contextualising/positioning what was happening locally, within what was occurring nationally and internationally, which feels essential for any ‘regional’ ‘scene’.

It’s been a pleasure working with @katherinestownsend on this project, and I can’t wait to share a series of essays written by @fodder_stompf who has also provided research & consultancy on the project, and interviewed several protagonists of that era 🙏 (Ian’s substack is excellent btw)
