Holy Tree (India), tapestry, on show at the Natthagen exhibition, Summer 2026 in Julussdalen in Norway. This work was purchased by a lovely couple from Trondheim, where it now proudly hangs on their wall. The design was inspired by the Makanne residency at Udaipur, Rajasthan, India. Makanne is the residency of Anne Vilsbøll, founder of the IAPMA (International Association Paper Makers and Artists). This giant old tree stood next to the for Indians holy river. It seems to have roots in the air as well. These gorgeous flowers were fist sized wonders of beauty. To emphasise details I felted patches of multi coloured wool. The tapestry was jacquard woven at the Textile Museum Tilburg. #natthagen #natthagenair #natthagengalleri #textielmuseum #textielmuseumtilburg #textiellab_tilburg #textiellab #iapma #annevilsbøll #textil #textile #textileart #textileartist #weaving #textiledesigner #holytree

IAPMA Bulletin No. 65 “UNITY” and 40 years of IAPMA

In its 40th anniversary year, the International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists (IAPMA) e.V. @iapma presents its annual Bulletin under the title UNITY.

The Bulletin has been an IAPMA tradition since the association was founded in 1986. It was one of its earliest ways of connecting members across continents, sharing knowledge and artistic work and building an international network long before social media and today’s digital communication.

This anniversary edition also includes a contribution on IAPMA’s founding and an article about the early years of IAPMA by one of the founding members Anne Vilsbøll @annevilsboll (Denmark).

Produced especially for members, the annual Bulletin features artworks, projects, research and activities from across the international paper art community.

Bulletin No. 65 also carries the material tradition of handmade paper: the cover was created by Renate Habinger (Austria), who also contributed a paper swatch. Further paper swatches were contributed by Anke Meixner @anke_meixner (Germany), Amanda Degener @hmpeditions_amanda_degener (USA) and Heike Berl @heike_berl_art (Germany).

Handmade Cover & Paper Swatch: Renate Habinger (Austria)
Bulletin Editor: Sophie Chanyoung Kim @sophc.k (South Korea)
Graphic Design: Orit Tenzer @10zerophoto (USA)
Bulletin Print Coordinator USA: Amanda Degener @hmpeditions_amanda_degener (USA)
Bulletin Print Coordinator Rest of the World: Ilze Dilane @paperceramicstudio (Latvia)

Thank you to all contributing members and to the Board members who supported the proofreading and preparation of this edition.

The Bulletin is distributed annually to all IAPMA members and is also available at www.iapma.info.

My contribution to this year's biblio prize in Port Fairy was inspired by the novel Revelation Beach by Susan Francis. Reading the book less me down memory lane to 1973 when I waited until the end of the tennis season then headed North and West. My first stop was East Timor as it was then and the novel brought back to me the fact that it was so lucky that I went then and not two years later. I was reminded of crossing the border between East and West Timor and the guards were so bored they wanted to see everything in our backpacks down to the tampons. So I decided to make a back pack plus contents out of momigamied paper and teabags. I've had lots of fun making miniature clothes, makeup, and tampons as well as looking out letters that I wrote home and slides I took along the way. #paper #papermaking #paperastextile #paperart

Perspectives shift when we allow ourselves to turn the world around.

A closer look at Le Grand Bleu - Axis of Unity. By rotating the vertical square frame independently around the central sphere, the viewer experiences a dynamic interplay of geometry and depth. The continuous white equator line encircles the sphere and extends across the square plane, a paradox of framing the sky with the sky itself.

Having the world literally in your hands is a reminder of our shared responsibility and our capacity for harmony.

Here is a paper lantern I made inspired by a lantern at 575 Wandsworth Road @575wandsworthroadnt a National Trust house in London. I made this for a workshop I ran today at Battersea Arts Centre for the National Trust where participants papercut their own lanterns to take home with an electric tea light inside. Here are some of the amazing papercut lantern designs that people created.

Registration for the IAPMA Paper Congress for members and non-members will close on Sep.1st- so you still have two more weeks to sign up on www.iapma.info/Congresses.

Since April 8th Iapma@iapma and convenor Anne Vilsboell@paperacademy.dk have been announcing the first paper- focused congress of it’s kind in India on social media and via emails.
The Congress will be at Third Space in Udaipur, Raj., India from Feb. 10 - 14, 2027 with the theme”Defining Paper”,highlighting the paper space as a laboratory.
Through focus on paper as an art form in it’s own right and the many possibilities for collaborative workshops with artists, designers and craftspeople in India we can help to orient the many aspects of paper towards the Sustainable Development Goals.
We look forward to welcome you.

Last July, I received the Issue 65 of the IAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists) bulletin, which showcases artists from around the world working with paper as a material—a living, sensitive fiber. I also had the pleasure of seeing my article, « Sensilles / poeticizing our links with insects, » featured in the issue; it describes my *Sensilles* installation created in October 2026 for the @r.cas_festival. This project—an intense, sound-based collaboration with @felix_la_mort_en_espagnol—is currently on display at @lachartreusedaillon as part of the *Germinations* project. Many thanks to IAPMA for their support!
