Just heard that author-illustrator Elise Gravel has been selected by IBBY Canada as a candidate for the Astrid Lindgren award. And her newest picture book MY FRIEND FEAR (from North Winds Press/Scholastic Canada) shows why. It's fun while recognizing that we all have fears—often for good reasons—and how to work with them. My review is now up at https://canlitforlittlecanadians.blogspot.com/2026/10/my-friend-fear.html Book cover of picture book, "My Friend Fear," written and illustrated by Elise Gravel, shows a large blue monster with open mouth and waving hands trying to scare a smaller orange monster who looks at it with curiosity.

I had the pleasure of attending the IBBY Conference this summer in Ottawa, Ontario.

A wonderful retreat that brought together storytellers, educators, authors, and book lovers from around the world.

I left feeling inspired, connected, and reminded of the magic of children’s literature ❤️📖

A couple of months ago, our publisher, Susan, was a panelist at the 40th IBBY World Congress in Ottawa, presenting alongside speakers from Latin America and Cyprus on combatting silencing and erasure. There was something particularly special about this session. The lively conversation continued afterward with attendees and panelists exchanging ideas and making connections. So, of course, we had to take a photo together! @ibbycanada @ibby.international

When I attended the @ibby.international congress in Canada, organized by @ibbycanada, I met @donofrio.delia. We started to talk about reading and my research, and we’ve stayed in touch ever since. Now I’ve been invited to @casadipia_2.0 in Italy to talk about using fiction in science education.

Tak!

På scenen fik vi alle mikrofonen for at sige en kort refleksion over kongressens tema “Listening to Each Other’s Voices”.

Tak for oplevelsen!

Tak for den store ære at være på den flotte liste!

Looking back at Ottawa 2026 🇨🇦

A few weeks after the 40th IBBY World Congress, we look back on four inspiring days of encounters, exchanges and discoveries.

From 6 to 9 August 2026, IBBY Morocco brought Moroccan voices to Ottawa under the theme “Listening to Each Other’s Voices.”

🌍 New connections, ideas and opportunities for collaboration that we look forward to sharing with you in our upcoming posts.

Ottawa was a meeting point. The journey continues. 🇲🇦🌍

Out and about in Lunenburg with Jane and Mary. I met them both at the @ibby.international Congress in Ottawa, hosted by @ibbycanada where Jane was representing Ireland in her capacity as president of @ibbyireland

We visited 2 of 3 esteemed bookshops in Lunenburg @blockshopbooks and @lunenburg.bound.books ~ sadly could not visit @elizabethsbooksns as it is only open at night, when they will be departing for Dublin.

At the IBBY World Congress in Canada, Teresa Antony presented her paper, “Reimagining Accessible Storybooks Through Co-Design and Technology.”
The presentation showcased A Game of Sticks and a new Indian printing technology that brings together print, tactile imagery and Braille, opening up exciting possibilities for producing engaging, accessible storybooks at scale.

It was wonderful to see the work so warmly received by participants from across the world, with many conversations around what this could mean for the future of inclusive publishing.

A heartfelt thank you to Kalike, Tata Trusts and Parag, Tata trust for supporting this journey and making it possible for us to share this work on an international stage.

Here’s to taking Indian innovation, inclusive design and the joy of reading to many more children!

An unexpected exercise at @IbbyCanada’s 40th Ibby World Congress: we were each given a rock.

We were told that everything in nature has a story. That stones have been here since the beginning of time. We wrote our own story on the rock with an acrylic marker, then were asked to sit quietly and listen to what the rock had to say.

It was part of a larger conversation about “Hear the Future: Listening to Young Voices to Reimagine Children’s Media for a Sustainable World.”

One idea from the session stayed with Susan:

The challenge isn’t to teach children to speak. It’s to learn how to listen to the future. Children can lead us toward truths we’ve forgotten.

“Take children by the hand and follow them into the future.”

Old(er) & young both loved these sweet reflections ✨✨✨

A Friend is a Friend is a Friend 💖
written by Sara O’Leary
illustrated by Qin Leng

★"Equal parts earnest & humorous, [it] captures the fears, joys, and fun of making friends & invites readers to take the plunge." -The Horn Book

★"It’s a pitch perfect read aloud—warm, gentle, funny, and poetic. Qin’s art is, as always, joyfully loose yet detailed, soft yet vivid." -The Needle and the Knife

★"While O’Leary’s writing does a wonderful job of exploring the complex topic of friendship, Qin Leng’s lively, gestural illustrations bring the story & its characters to life… warm & nostalgic…cozy…" -Sal Sawler, Quill & Quire

★"The colourful, activity-filled pages will have readers wanting to join in the laughing, sharing, climbing, running & exploring. A wonderful book to share with children to talk about relationships & what friendship means to them." -Calgary Herald

★"The richness of their experiences is only matched by the individuality of their friendships. O'Leary gets to the heart of friendships… Her message is one of joy in the diversity of who we are & how we make friends. Leng's art…bright in mood… giving them innocence, playfulness, and wonder." -CanLit for Little Canadians

★"This multiracial group is full of joy & matter of fact wisdom, and it’s a delight to hear this wonderful advice from the mouths of babes. The text is almost entirely in quotations from the kids, who are in constant motion… The kids’ skin tones & body shapes & gender presentations are all over the map & their joy & excitement about being there is infectious. Qin Leng’s fabulous artwork is full of life." -Youth Service Book Review

★"Colorful…peppy picture book… an encouraging tale about finding your place among others…" -Foreword
