What if doing less harm is no longer enough? What if we judged design not only by what we take from the Earth, but also by what we give back?

This week, the AIA took an important step toward answering those questions.
@aianational American Institute of Architects (AIA) convened our Regenerative Design Summit, bringing together 50+ experts from around the world. Architects, government and policy leaders, finance experts, academics, allied organizations, students from @citytech_architecture City Tech Department of Architecture and community leaders came together to advance regenerative design across our profession. What does it take to welcome climate migrants? Turns out, many communities already have the answer — they just don’t know it yet.

Join @welcomingusa and @iclei_usa for ‘Climate Migration Readiness: Bridging Welcoming and Resilience’ TOMORROW Thursday, October 15 from 11-2pm.

This free virtual program will explore how existing immigrant welcoming infrastructure and local governments can help communities prepare for climate-related migration. Through real examples, we’ll look at how immigrant affairs and climate resilience teams can learn from each other and build on what already exists.

This is a great webinar to join if you missed the @meclimateaction & @maineimmigrantrights
Welcoming Week program, or a followup on how to take next steps in making your community welcoming to all!

🌎 Former Mayor of Paris Anne Hidalgo hosts high-level meeting on Swimmable Cities at NY Climate Week as Early Bird Registrations open for Global Summit 🏊🏽‍♀️

It’s official - ‘Swimmability’ is on the urban climate agenda and it will soon be on the international water agenda.

Today, we hosted a meeting with Anne Hidalgo (former Mayor of Paris) and Catherine McKenna (former Canadian Minister of Environment & Climate) to discuss the mainstreaming of ‘Swimmability’ in the lead up to the UN Water Conference in Abu Dhabi, December 8-10.

Taking place on the banks of the East River, at the Solar One Environmental Education Centre, leaders met to discuss strategies for supporting decision-makers, practitioners and advocates in the practical implementation of urban swimming infrastructure.

Priority #1 - Planning for a new Swimmable Cities Handbook 2.0 with a roadmap, case studies and indicators.

Why? Because that’s what mayors and local leaders are asking us for.

The next phase of the movement will flow between grassroots, city and national leadership; making partnerships (public and private) more important than ever.

Naturally, we discussed collaborations with networks such as C40 Cities, Resilient Cities Network, iCLEI and of course UN-Habitat’s Global Water Operators Partnership Alliance (backed by ED Anaclaudia Rossbach).

📣 Early Bird registrations are now open for the 2nd global Swimmable Cities Summit, being hosted in Ottawa-Gatineau (Canada), August 25-28 2027.

We warmly welcome Individuals, Businesses, Organisations & City Delegations to Register Now:

🐾 Introducing ‘Doggone Plastic’ - A Nationwide Movement that Inspires Plastic-Free Communities in Fun and Impactful Ways!

🐶 Doggone Plastic is a new educational initiative that helps cities nationwide inspire their communities to embrace plastic-free living through fun events and
activities.

🐶 It grew out of the popular ALX Dog Walk event in Alexandria, VA — an annual 2K dog walk and eco-festival that, during Earth Month, brings together thousands of people and their dogs for a morning of #funactivism.

🐶 After a beautiful 2k dog walk, the event’s eco-festival celebration features vendors from public, private, and nonprofit organizations who display/sell sustainable products and services. Other activities include a plastic-art competition, a hilarious dog show, a nonprofit village, a sustainable bake sale, a free coffee station (if you bring your own mug!), a Goodie Bag filled with sustainable treats, and much more.

🐶 Doggone Plastic Founder Julie Chapman shared: “This lighthearted, fun educational approach inspires action. For the past five years, the ALX Dog Walk event has reached people with positive messages about plastic-free living alternatives. Research from last April’s event revealed that 89% of participants said they were motivated to change plastic habits (59% extremely/very motivated; 30% moderately motivated).”

🐶 Doggone Plastic will feature the ALX Dog Walk event as one of several case studies for communities seeking to replicate its success. Chapman (Founder of the ALX Dog Walk which is now led by the Animal Welfare League of Alexandria and Eco-City Alexandria) continued: “We’re opening our playbook by offering a FREE, turnkey ‘How-To Launch a 2k Dog Walk & Eco-Festival Guidebook’ for leaders in cities nationwide who want an effective and fun way to mobilize their communities around plastic-free living.”

🐶 To receive our FREE Guidebook, email us at barkon@doggoneplastic.com and follow us here.
