Oh hey, it’s August! And if you’re like me, you haven’t flipped your calendar page until today. This month’s IC Press Co-op calendar print is by yours truly. Do you remember me making this crazy, multi-layered, all-hand-stamped edition? It was super fun to make, and I sure hope you enjoy it this month!

P.S. I chose August because it’s my birthday month! Turning 40 on the 10th. Wahoo

Background color of cotton fabric for screen printing workshop that I’m teaching at @icpresscoop dyed with cutch & Myrobalan viewed in sunlight. In the past my usage of cutch has created more mauve leaning terra cotta but this bath looks more like a muted coreopsis. So many variables. Water was PH 5, used cutch ground in a coffee filter & sieved to remove just the powder fine particles for use, stored in a mason jar with metal twist close lid, used cutch I had stored ground, so wasn’t ground immediately before use. Scoured white cotton fabric with synthrapol & washing soda. Mordanted with aluminum acetate & followed up with chalk bath day after mordanting. Dyed with 8.63% of cutch, Myrobalan was 5.6% of WOF

Handmade Paper
I spent a wonderful weekend at a two-day workshop focused on DIY recycled papermaking. It was a sweet immersive, creative process that gave me a fresh perspective on the paper.

Iowa City Press Co-op @icpresscoop : The arts studio environment was incredibly welcoming, and the workshop was beautifully structured. Having access to a great variety of materials allowed for total creative freedom.

Our instructor Heather Steckler @heathersteckler was wonderful—so generous with her knowledge and always there to guide us. The group itself was a great mix of creative individuals, making the atmosphere very supportive and inspiring.

🦋 my result:
I came away with 20 unique sheets of paper. For a few of them, I experimented with a collage technique, embedding elements directly into the pulp during the pulling process. Each sheet turned out with its own distinct texture and character.

I’m very grateful to Public Space One @p_s_won for the insights and inspiration. This definitely feels like the beginning of a new chapter—I’m looking forward to experimenting more and continuing to craft my own paper.

Angry Pack — Print Against the Machine — $30

The machine has always chewed people up and spit them out, and it’s now running in an even higher gear.

The artists of @icpresscoop's Print Against The Machine stand up with art expressing the hope, care, anger, and actions that build the world we want here at home. The Angry Pack contains original art and goodies, locally made with love and rage. It is limited to 20 packs.

All of the proceeds from the sale of the Angry Pack will go to @icmutualaid. This local group of neighbors is building a better, more resilient community by providing support for basic necessities such as rent, utilities, groceries, transportation, healthcare; safety for our unhoused neighbors; connection for queer inmates; and more.

You can learn more about that work at icmutualaid.org and purchase the Angry Pack at @p_s_won's ICE CREAM tomorrow, April 4, 11 a.m.-5 p.m. at the Close House (538 S. Gilbert) Pack of prints with phrases like "No new jail," "Resist. Resist." "Protect your neighbors," "Burn it down" and "Capitalism is organized crime."

I dropped off this piece for an upcoming IC Press Co-op group show at the Grinnell College Burling Gallery! It’s from the ‘Graces of the Goddess Dadaist’ series. 11”x14”. Letterpress, collagraph, pen & ink, collage on my great-grandmother’s (G-ma Stoll’s) photo book paper.
