🌟 Merry Christmas & happy 2024! 🌟

The modern day Von Trapp family players (from 2016) present a soulful interpretation, a classic already, of the Little Drummer Boy. We hope you enjoy. Truly.

Jean Sibelius: Romance

Happy birthday Janne! This piece is also originally for violin and piano, but goes for flute very nicely. As a teenager I wasn’t so keen on playing this, have to admit. But in this case I’m happy to say I have grown (emotionally). My favorite part is the ending, two last lines, when it gets dolcissimo, very soft and sweet.
In our matinée this was after Mazurka and Novellette.

Today is also the celebration of Finnish music, so all of you can go to imslp.org and get some Sibelius to play 🤓 Or go elsewhere online & listen to some Kaija Saariaho. Or one of the many great Finnish bands & singers. Yay us! 🇫🇮

Recorded at the Sibelius home in Hämeenlinna, with an ipad pro.

Lili Boulanger: D’un matin de printemps

If you didn’t know the name of this piece, it could easily be about a snow storm/blizzard! Or maybe a fun snowball fight on a big yard. Whatever your images be, the music has tons of energy and playfulness to it. My favorite parts are the sudden quiet waters in the middle of all roaming about. So, this work is recommended for (almost) every occasion, but definitely for all seasons of the year.

There are 2 more pieces coming up from our Sibelius home matinée. Then maybe something else 🤓

Mel Bonis: Pièce

Our afternoon at Sibelius’ living room continues with this beautiful one-part Pièce from Mélanie Hélène Bonis. A French composer from late-Romantic era, her alma mater being the Paris Conservatory and class mates for example Claude Debussy, one of her teachers Cesar Franck. Her life wasn’t easy, but still her catalogue has about 300 works. Go and get to know her music. I’m very happy that my friend & flute colleague Machteld showed me a collection of Works by Women Composers, when we visited @chimes_music in South Kensington last Easter 🥰

Sibelius: Novellette

Not all of our pieces were in a Major key - for example this one. Though it does change, which I like 😁 Novellette is a bit dramatic, or even anxious at some point. But it’s all released in the end 💞 It has been described as sort of Northern impressionism, à la Debussy’s Arabesques.

Sibelius: Mazurka

Next of our duets was this pack of energy & surprising quieter moments, in the form of a Mazurka. Before this Ulla played a solo, the spicy Etude from Sibelius. It has so much life that we just had to play something with enough kick after it 😁

Cécile Chaminade: Sérénade aux étoiles

This beautiful piece written for stars was third in our programme. Nightly sky twinkling away, with some Northern lights coloring it. Which actually even Southern Finland saw quite recently! (I didn’t as the ”city” lights block everything.) (But I’ve seen them when living in Kemijärvi back in the day.)

We chose music from three French women composers to our concert, other half was Sibelius. Women who lived during the same era. Mixed the order of pieces to link the different (or same, in some cases) atmospheres together. I hope you enjoy this little journey with us ✨

Jean Sibelius: Waltz

On the second day of December we bring you once again this lovely Waltz, which has an innocent air to it but a teenytiny bit of drama in the middle. Luckily it all ends well! 😁💕

The Waltz (that we’ve stolen from violin players) was also second number in our matinée, as we thought it would make a suitable contrast to Nocturne. And it did.
