60 years after Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale founded the Black Panther Party in Oakland, the city just put their name on Broadway. 🖤✊🏾

Come with me to witness Oakland and Black history!!!

Today, Oakland commemorated the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party by naming a stretch of historic downtown Broadway Black Panther Party Boulevard.

And some of the people who helped shape, preserve, and carry this history were there. Bobby Rush, co-founder of the Illinois Black Panther Party; Fredrika Newton, former Panther and wife of Huey P. Newton; Mama C (Charlotte Hill O’Neal), former Panther and longtime community organizer in Tanzania; Fred Hampton Jr., son of Chairman Fred Hampton; and Oakland Mayor Barbara Lee.

My family has been in Oakland since the 1920s. My grandmother went to kindergarten here. So did mi madre, who was born in 1949 and grew up in Oakland during one of the most revolutionary periods in this city’s history.

This feels full circle living my adulthood in a place that holds so much of my family’s ancestral memory. Walking these same streets, knowing what generations before me witnessed, and now being present for another historic moment.

60 years later, the Black Panther Party’s legacy is still being honored in the city where it all began and I’m so grateful to witness and be part of this history.

Grateful to have witnessed this moment and to be part of Oakland’s living Black history. Also—how many cities you know has a mayor celebrating Black revolutionary history? 🥹 This is how we do in the town.

Thank you @hueypnewtonfoundation @blackpantherpartymuseum @bpp60th @mayorbarbaralee @xavierbuck

And shoutout to my sis @sadesalchemy capturing the ribbon cutting because my phone overheated 🥵

+++ music choice in honor of Fela Kuti who would have celebrated 87 years on the 15th ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽

All Power to the People. 🖤

We're very grateful and honored that we were invited to share on the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther party and their legacy in Oakland while also celebrating the phenomenal ancestor, master Bruce Lee and his work and influence in Oakland at this year's @lifeislivingfest festival !! 🌊⚔️🙌🏾👑🙏🏾

We were inspired by the stories and presence of Master Shannon Lee @therealshannonlee daughter of the legendary Bruce Lee and brother of the iconic Brandon Lee, renowned author Jeff Chang @zentronix , and martial arts elder and the member of the Black Panther party, Professor McCuthin @bppaln for sharing as panelists and speakers on the history of martial arts, resilience, and resistance in Oakland! And Master Bruce!

Thank you to the LIFE is LIVING festival @lifeislivingfest, to ALL the organizers and participants, as well as all of our students and instructors from VSCK Global and @trs.vsck for coming out to share with us.

We deeply appreciate sharing and teaching our late teacher, Maestro Umpad's art, @visayaneskrima and be solidarity and in struggle against establishments and social infrastructures that are unjust, and to represent our culture alongside other amazing artists, educators, activists, and community members of Oakland and the Bay Area! Oakland and the ancestors are so proud.

Yeah it’s tradition, it’s who we are as a city, a social justice city and a Hip Hop city. A place of immense talent and determination. Authenticity is what we breed. It’s in our poetry, it’s in our voices. It’s in our intention. It’s in our vote. It’s in every weapon we use to survive, to affirm a future. So we have a cypher with some amazing MCs known for shifting time with their words. We have special guests to help us remember it’s an intergenerational thing this bridge from Panthers to Hip Hop. One thing has remained consistent, voting still mattered. Knowing is still critically important to doing. So come witness the knowers. And if you are one and can bear witness with a mic, a beat and a circle please join us. Life is Living Tomorrow Little Bobby Hutton Park 11-4p. #apartyforselfdefense

New York Climate Week keeps getting better and better!
Im continuing to expand my climate movement family from Mariana Island to Canada, Nepal, California, South Dakota, Brooklyn, Washington, New Orleans, to Oakland, Kenya, Texas! Thank you for the prayers, the medicine and the stories! By experiencing the fall equinox to the full moon on the East Coast, I could only imagine how our ancestors gathered during these times.
My heart is so fulfilled knowing that there's so many people working to dismantle colonialism and capitalism! It's so important that we continue to have Indigenous people at the forefront of climate solutions!
.
As both my parents are members of the American Indian Movement, it has showed me that the climate justice movement is so small on NDN Country. It's crucial that we continue to bring in new people into the climate justice movement. From our youth to our Elders, everyone has a space in the climate movement.
.
Being in New York is not new to my family.
.
My dad was an ironworker alongside our Mohawk relatives. He also helped post 911 during cleanup and conducted ceremony. Unfortunately, during one of his World Peace talks in NYC, he was stabbed. So thankful my dad survived this brutal attack. But it showed me how dangerous it can be to stand up for what you believe in.
My mom spoke at the Global Victims of Radiation Confrence and highlighted the impacts on uranium on Navajo Nation in 1987. This was begining the Southwest Indigenous Uranium Forum with John Redhouse. In 1998, my mom, Ramsey Clark (Former Attorney General for JFK), Michio Kaku and Manny Pino spoke on panel at the UN on the issues of depleted Uranium (DU) and banning DU in weapons for war.
My brother in 2014, participated in the largest climate walk hosted by @uprosebrooklyn. He was called to do Security For for Leonardo DiCaprio.
My first experience of New York City is going to a Climate justice youth conference hosted by @uprosebrooklyn.
.
My dad calls New York City the center of the world. Not only everyone from around the world knows about New York City but there's people from all over the world that come to New York and most know NOTHING about Indigenous ppl!

A snippet of the magic that was our artist walkthrough yesterday for BLACK INTERIORS, celebrating 5 years of @blackspaceresidency

We witnessed something transformational, the sharing of stories, process, inquiry, research, lineage and ancestral connections. We were moved in this moment, we felt the spirit.

The walkthrough over ran and yet the questions kept coming, we all stayed to the end, in anticipation and curiosity.

Thank you to the amazing artist alumni, you are the reason that this residency exists and why we keep moving forward. Also, thanks to @erica_deeman @trina_m_robinson @taz_laursen for the work that went into creating this moment for deep sharing and celebration.

The show is open until October 31, @minnesotastreetproject when we will celebrate again.

5:55am Homie, Sometimes the people you love won’t choose you the way you choose them. You won’t always get the invitation. You won’t always get the call. You might even feel slept on, overlooked, or left out.

But I’m learning not to abandon myself just because somebody else doesn’t see my value.

So while they sleep on me, I work on me.
I train. I heal. I create. I protect my energy. I pour that love back into myself.

I don’t need an invitation to take care of me.
I don’t need to be chosen to know I’m worthy.

This season is teaching me that sometimes choosing yourself means being comfortable standing alone not out of anger, but out of self-respect.

If I’m not invited, I’m still showing up for myself.

Venus retrograde got me reevaluating love, relationships, value & most importantly, the relationship I have with me.

Sleep on me if you want. I’m not sleeping on myself. 🌱
