iida jonsson (@iidajonsson_ ) and ssi saarinen (@__.ssi__ ) on the Writings of Jennie June.

Now you can read an interview with our Finnish artists-in-residency iida and ssi about their spring in New York!

iida and ssi work with film and photography. During their New York spring, they spent a lot of time at Pioneer Works (@pioneerworks ), an arts organization located in Red Hook, Brooklyn, where they had their studio.

During their residency they have been developing a film and photographic project based on New York author Jennie June, whose autobiographies are among the earliest published texts by someone we might today understand as a trans or non-binary. 📖🎥

We caught up with them to discuss their experience in New York and how their research and work has progressed.

⚡️Are you coming to Open Studios this Saturday? Meet our artists! ⚡️

🟡 Michaela Schwentner @jade__enterprise presents the results of her research on the Finnish Civil War by assembling text and image material, maps, and small film tableaux into an installation.

🟡 The collective of Iida Jonsson @iidajonsson_ / Ona Julija Lukas Steponaitytė @julijasteponaityte / Ssi Saarinen @__.ssi__ / and the curator Hampus Bergander @hampusbergander presents a selection of rushes from an ongoing video work—a concert inside the Finlandia Hall during its renovation—with music by Alexander Iezzi @alexanderiezzi and research together with Hampus Bergander @hampusbergander

🟡 Nagisa Mizuno @mizunonagisa reflects on Vuosaari Hill, once filled with waste and now covered in greenery and alive as a place of recreation for humans. Walking together with tour participants, she listened to a geologist’s stories of time layered in soil and stone. They tuned in to the rustling wind, swaying grasses, and the hum of engines from nearby factories, exploring the resonant noises of urban ecologies. What can we forage from the creative heritage of the Anthropocene?

See you this Saturday from 16–20 in Suomenlinna 🎉🎉🎉

A new year is here with new ideas and inspirations. It has also brought two new people to New York, our Artists-in-Residence, iida jonsson and ssi saarinen! 🌟❄️

iida jonsson (@iidajonsson_) and ssi saarinen (@__.ssi__) are a Finnish artist duo, working with film and photography. During their residency they will deepen their research into identity, visibility, and belonging by engaging with the writings of Jennie June, whose autobiographies have long remained at the margins of both literary and queer canons. June’s often overlooked texts are among the earliest published writings by a trans non-binary author.

iida and ssi hold MFAs from the Sandberg Instituut in Amsterdam and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Past exhibitions include KIN Museum of Contemporary Art, Kiruna; and Berlin Art Week Featured at Reethaus, Berlin; Kunsthal Charlottenborg, Copenhagen; and Kunstverein, Amsterdam with Ona Julija Lukas Steponiatytė. They recently participated in the Helsinki International Artist Programme working on their film Suzanne.

iida and ssi’s residency at Pioneer Works (@pioneerworks) runs from January to March 2026, and we’re so excited to follow their journey and share moments from their time in New York!💫

||| SECOND ARTIST RELEASE |||

We’re proud to unveil the second round of acts for Norbergfestival 2026!

We welcome you to partake in noise exploration by Max Wainwright; idiosyncratic audiovisual experiments from Diter; Innershas deep psychedelic techno; Tamil-liberation techno by Nagaver and Noneless' haunting world of modern classical and breakcore.

In Mimer, Abul Mogard unleashes his spectral soundscapes shaking the foundations of the building, eurodyke explores high frequency phase shifts & Otso Aho presents a multichannel Ambisonics work tailored to the building. In the Norberg church, Luka Aron will present a rendition of his tour-de-force piece Up in the Bell Tower.

For restless bodies we offer you baby ganoush’s genrefluid and leftfield goodness, zabutom’s mindbending chip melodies, Filen’s swampy and ghostly psytrance, Issatrinity’s blend of global club music and techno; and Spongebob Squarewave’s edit-fueled raving donk madness.

We also spotlight the vibrant Polish footwork scene presenting the godfather of Polish footwork Paide, the energetic and versatile Sknit and drummer Gary Gwadera.

Our friends at Elektronmusikstudion EMS showcase the immersive and spatial sounds of Marieke van de Ven and the mysterious, specially formed improvisational trio of Das kleine Bergbauensemble.

Finally, this year’s visual arts residents Iida Jonsson & Ssi Saarinen will show their works in Norberg and in special film screenings in Mimerlaven.

We are not finished and look forward to sharing even more of our program in the coming months.
