Florence Blanchfield was a trailblazing advocate for the Army-Navy Nurse Act, signed by President Truman on April 16, 1947. This legislation granted @USArmy and @USNavy nurses permanent commissioned officer status.

On July 18, 1947, General Dwight D. Eisenhower appointed Blanchfield as a lieutenant colonel within the Army Nurse Corps, making her the first woman to hold a permanent, regular commission in the U.S. Army.

4. Learn more about Kansas’ most famous leader at the Dwight D. Eisenhower Presidential Library, Museum, & Boyhood Home in Abilene. At @ikelibrary, visitors can explore the extraordinary life & legacy of the 5-star General who led the Allied victory in WWII & became America’s 34th president.
5. Head to Wichita to see the distinctive The Keeper of the Plains – a 44-foot tall steel sculpture standing at the point where the Big & Little Arkansas rivers join together in downtown Wichita. This land between the two rivers is sacred ground to the Native American people & is also home to the Mid-America All-Indian Museum. Join the people who gather each evening to see the Keeper & the lit fire pots that surround it, known as the Ring of Fire.
6. As the gravel cycling capital of the world, the state has some of the best gravel riding anywhere, as well as famous trails for mountain biking. Southeast Kansas is also packed with scenic trails, outdoor recreation, & adventure opportunities, making it the perfect destination for travelers who love to explore the outdoors.
