For Renike, the heart of Nigerian illustration lies in its ability to reflect who we are.

From vibrant personalities and bold colours to the energy that defines our communities, Nigerian illustrators continue to create work that is deeply rooted in identity and unmistakably our own.

It’s this authenticity that makes the Nigerian illustration scene so distinctive—and so powerful.

Behind every illustrator is a world of inspirations—and for Lamidi Abloh, music is one of them. It’s another creative language he’s always loved, one that offers the same sense of expression, curiosity, and freedom that fuels his visual practice.

Whether through symbols, illustrations, or sound, Lamidi’s passion has always been rooted in creating experiences that connect with people.

For Kehinde Owolawi, illustration goes beyond making something look good. From colour and composition to shapes and visual metaphors, every element has the power to communicate meaning and evoke emotion.

His perspective is a reminder that great illustration isn’t just seen—it’s felt. The more intentional the choices behind the work, the deeper the connection with the people experiencing it.

Here’s What’s On with the Illustrator Cohort in the month of August.

We start off with the CRIT. It's an opportunity for you to show your work in progress, get a second eye on the pieces you are working on and get some input from fellow practitioners, drawing from their own references, knowledge and experiences for better outcomes.

We then have something for the animation and film lovers. We will be hosting our first session of the 146 Animation Film Club, where we will be showing some cool, experimental animated short films along with features at InBloom Space in Gbagada on the 22nd of August 2026.

Last but not least, we will be having our Life Drawing Session. Open to everyone; it is a chance to relax and meet some new people and draw some models. It’s no pressure, just time to have fun.

See you soon!

What if symbols could tell stories?

For Lamidi Abloh, they do.

Inspired by the ancient world of runes, his work explores symbols used to preserve knowledge, communicate ideas, and express meaning across generations. Through months of research and experimentation, Lamidi developed his own personalised runic system—transforming letters, numbers, and language into a visual experience that is uniquely his.

Step into his exhibition and discover a body of work where history, symbolism, and contemporary illustration come together in unexpected ways.
