Fighting for people serving unjust, unnecessary, and excessive sentences in Illinois.

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

Such a great evening at the 6th Annual Illinois Prison Project Gala!

A huge shoutout to Jenny Soble and the incredible IPP team. In just seven years, they’ve helped free 207 incarcerated individuals while also advocating for meaningful changes to Illinois sentencing laws and prison policies. Pretty incredible work.

It was great to hear Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois State Senator Robert Peters speak about prison reform. I also loved learning more about Bernardine Dohrn, a badass attorney who has spent decades fighting for human rights and justice. What a woman!

Coming from healthcare, I can’t help but think about how interconnected incarceration and access to healthcare really are. Imagine the impact of better access to mental health services, substance use treatment, and preventive care before someone ever enters the prison system. Just as important is access to quality healthcare and rehabilitation during incarceration and after release. There are so many layers to this issue, and healthcare is a big one.

There’s still a lot of work to be done, but people like Jenny and the entire IPP team give me hope. They don’t just talk about change, they’re actually making it happen. I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to attend this beautiful gala, learn, and support such an organization making a meaningful impact. ❤️

Illinois Prison Project does amazing work and I am so grateful to have received their visionary award. At the end of the day this work isn’t about me, it’s about the people I organize with to make change.

(This isn’t the best video but it captured much of my speech.) Solidarity!

Your voice matters in Illinois policymaking—and knowing how to use it matters, too.

The Education Justice Project's Policy & Research Division has created a new Witness Slip Guide to help people understand and navigate one of the ways they can make their voices heard in the Illinois General Assembly.

A witness slip allows individuals and organizations to formally register their position on a bill before it's considered by a legislative committee. Our new step-by-step guide walks you through finding a hearing, identifying a bill, and submitting a witness slip.

This resource is especially timely as the Illinois General Assembly prepares for Veto Session, November 17–19 and December 1–3.

We hope this guide helps more people feel informed, prepared, and confident to participate directly in the policymaking process—and to use their voices to advocate for the issues that matter to them.

Today is Anthony Gay's birthday, and we in the National Alliance are holding his memory close as we continue to build on the struggles he waged in life.

In 2024, we founded the Anthony Gay Task Force on Prison Conditions where we coordinate work across our chapters and affiliates related to the conditions in U.S. prisons and jails, which are among the most repressive, violent, and deadly in the world.

From Philadelphia to Atlanta to the Lowcountry, our chapters are waging battles against medical neglect, wrongful death, torture, and all violations of the rights of the incarcerated.

Contact us at nationalaarpr@gmail.com to get involved or discuss starting a chapter in your city.

Anthony Gay's memory reminds us to keep fighting against the racist system of mass incarceration that stole his life.

LONG LIVE ANTHONY GAY!
