Part 2 with Chace, 11 — back to building the footwork foundation. 🍦 Last time we laid the base with the hop. Today we add the next tool: the 1-2. No music, just me coaching him through it live.

Three clips:

Clip 1 — Left-right from the elbow. One dribble middle into the pull-up, left foot plant into right gather. This is the rhythm most players live in.

Clip 2 — Right-left from the elbow. Same action, opposite feet. Every shooter needs both, because the defense and the dribble decide your footwork for you — train both and you’re never caught off balance.

Clip 3 — Triple threat. Now we put it to work. Two dribbles middle into the left-right gather. I stopped him on the pivot — watch the correction. That cross step has to be hard and aggressive, not soft. A sharp, violent first step relieves the ball pressure and sets up the whole middle drive. A lazy one keeps the defender attached.

Build the footwork in isolation, then layer it into a live read. That’s how a shooter becomes a scorer.

Start young. Stay consistent. Shot taker to shot maker. 🎯

What you’re watching: Chace, 11 years old, one year into his hoop journey — working handle into a pull-up jumper. No music on this one. Just me coaching him through it live so you can hear the why behind every rep. 🍦

Let’s break down the footwork, because that’s the whole lesson here.

We’re building Chace’s footwork foundation, and we’re starting with the hop. Off the dribble, he gathers and brings both feet down together in one motion. Down the road we’ll add the 1-2 (left-right or right-left) — every shooter needs both in the bag — but the hop is where we lay the base first.

Here’s why we start here:

The hop squares his shoulders and hips to the rim automatically. Both feet land at the same time, so there’s no leaning, no drifting — his base is set and balanced before he ever goes up.

It also makes the shot repeatable. Same gather, same rise, same release, every single time. When the footwork is identical rep after rep, the shot becomes muscle memory, and muscle memory is what holds up when the game speeds up and the defense is in his face. And here’s the part that really opens up his game: because both feet land together on the hop, he gets to choose his pivot foot. That’s huge the closer he gets to the rim. From that balanced gather he can pull up, jab and go, shot fake into a step-through, or pivot into a finish — one footwork base, a whole tree of counters off of it. The hop doesn’t just give him a jumper, it gives him options.

A year in, and these are the reps that separate kids who just shoot from kids who can really score. You don’t wait until high school to build footwork — you lay the foundation clean from the jump, while the habits are still forming.Start young. Stay consistent. Trust the details. Shot taker to shot maker. 🎯
