Practice makes progress! ✍🏻

I had such a lovely time teaching at @studio.inkwaves, sharing my love of calligraphy with a group of beginners. It’s always important to me to demystify oblique penholder and nibs, getting folks off on the right foot on their calligraphy journey. And it’s always a treat to share space with people who also love letters, words and handwriting. 🤍

I’m already pondering what we can do next!

For those in Montreal, what kind of class would interest you?

Another one-night workshop for beginners?

A multi-week winter course for beginners?

A pointed pen variations class for intermediates and past students?

Let me know! 👇🏻

It’s been a hot minute (translate: years) since I taught an in-person calligraphy class but it’s time again! ✨

On July 13th, I’ll be teaching an Introduction to Pointed Pen Calligraphy at @studio.inkwaves in St-Henri. Zero prior experience is required, but this is also a great opportunity if you’ve dabbled on your own and want hands-on instruction. The cost of the workshop includes a mini supply kit and a special bonus:

✨ You can submit 2 practice pages to me for personalized feedback up until one month after the workshop. Essentially, you send me a scan or high res photo and I mark it up with corrections and notes.✨

Feel free to drop into my DMs with any questions! You can sign up on my website. Looking forward to meeting you and sharing my love of letters! ✍🏻

Save the date! ✍🏻 The @societedescalligraphes is putting on our first CALLIGRAFEST, just in time for the holidays. It will be the perfect gathering to socialize, learn, and shop for original calligraphic works, greeting cards, holiday gifts, books, tools, and more!

Pop over to society’s page to see all of the details. 🤍 @geomatt and I are coordinating and hope to see many of you there. Don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions!

My favourite menu design to date, with all of the flourishes!

This menu was designed in collaboration with @mimosadesign.ca, who created the wax seal and intertwined of maple leaves and edelweiss. 🤍

A sunny and bright #throwbackthursday, captured by @lalor.photographie and styled by @cupkateandco.

I have an inventory of these mini plexiglas signs (both frosted and clear), do send me a message if you want to reserve a set for your wedding or special event this summer or fall. I’m almost tempted to make a few markers for my herbs! 🌿

Art meets science in the latest issue of @uppercasemag, and I got to do something a bit different than usual! Janine asked me to create a hand lettered poster of The Scientific Method for Creativity, to go alongside my article. I really enjoyed the whole process of research, writing the text and mapping out the concept visually. And much like my diagram, it was a thoroughly non-linear endeavour. 🙂

Excerpt: Despite our layered personalities and varied predilections, there is a longstanding notion that humans primarily use one side of our brain. The alleged “left-brained” people are logical and mathematical, whereas “right-brained” folks are creative and artistic. I, for one, call hogwash. Neuroscientist Dr. Joel Frohlich calls it a “pop psychology concept”, writing that “brain imaging technologies suggest that, on average, we use both sides of our brain equally. We are all ‘brain-ambidextrous.’” We can look to countless scientists who engage in creative problem solving and artistic avocations. There are legions of artists who are highly methodical and analytical in their practices. Given that artists and scientists are driven by inquiry, what if we approach creativity through the framework of the scientific method?
