I thought I was learning a backflip. Looking back, I was learning how to trust myself.

Rank these tricks from EASIEST to learn FIRST 👇

My order would be:

1. Aerial
You can see the ground the entire time, which makes it less intimidating for a lot of athletes. You can also learn it progressively by going more and more sideways before committing to the full skill.

2. Side Flip
This one took me longer than it should have, but overall it’s not as difficult as people think. The biggest key is keeping your shoulders and hips moving together instead of letting your body tilt unevenly.

3. Front Flip
I always say front flips are more physically challenging, while backflips are more mentally challenging. Most athletes find it easier to commit mentally to a front flip because they’re moving forward, but the landing is still blind.

4. Back Handspring
A standing back handspring is naturally easier than a standing back tuck for most people. That said, on a trampoline I’ve seen plenty of athletes learn a backflip before a back handspring. It depends on the athlete’s strengths and comfort level.

5. Back Tuck
The gatekeeper.

Most people will never do a backflip in their lifetime. Landing your first back tuck feels like a breakthrough moment—it proves you can set a goal, put in the work, trust the process, and overcome a real mental barrier. For many athletes, it’s the skill that opens the door to everything else!
