We are pleased to announce that New Heritage Theater Group’s Jamal Joseph, its newly named interim executive director is among those celebrated as part of the 60th anniversary of the Black Panther Party in a series of events, exhibits and discussions in Northern California honoring the movement’s history, legacy, and impact. Jamal is the second from the right in this photo.

Beginning Oct. 15, there will be film screenings and historical exhibits, street-renaming ceremonies and community gatherings, local organizations and former Panther party members engaging with the public in and around Oakland, Ca.

Jamal, an American writer, director, producer, poet, activist, and educator, was a member of the Black Panther party and Black Liberation Army, who was prosecuted and jailed, and earned his college degree. Jamal became a film faculty member and former chair of Columbia University’s Graduate Film Division.

In 1997, he became the executive artistic director of NHTG, has run its Harlemwood films program, a division of NHT, and co-founded the IMPACT Repertory Theatre. The film series has developed countless powerful documentaries, with a current film in development about Abby Hoffman.

Recently, he was named to head NHTG with the formal departure of Voza Rivers, his colleague, who now is serving as Emeritus Executive Producer.
Others pictured here are Majeedah Rahman, Billy X Jennings, Elbert “Big Man” Howard, Patricia Brown, Kathleen Cleaver, Angela Davis, co-founder Bobby Seale, J. Tarika Lewis, Ericka Huggins and Emory Douglas.

Thanks for the Memories
In a year of extreme challenges, professional and personal, we persevered with gratitude and now look to exciting new beginnings built on years of amazing collaboration. Just some highlights of this past year — Barbara and Voza

Craig Harris & Nation of Imagination
Another triumphant performance of Five on the Black Hand Side. Despite the snow, we filled Mount Morris Ascension Presbyterian Church for a wondrous tribute to Harlem.

harlem is… Immigrant Stories
We celebrated six Harlem heroes with roots in Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Senegal, Japan, Venezuela and Ireland — a beautiful reflection of the tapestry of influences that make up our community.

Soweto 50: A Day of Remembrance
In the spirit of decades of Voza’s work of bringing and connecting us globally including the staging of Serafina, we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the end of apartheid with unforgettable programming at schools and the Schomburg Center, with local and international guests, another milestone.

IMPACT Repertory Theatre
We celebrated IMPACT and Director Dietrice Bolden, including Soul to Soul with National Yiddish Theater, exploring the connections between African American and Yiddish traditions, civil rights and social justice.

New Heritage Films
Under Jamal Joseph, the series continued presenting important work, including Following Harry (Belafonte) by filmmaker Susanne Rostock at First Corinthian Baptist Church.

Voza Rivers Legacy Series
Irene Gandy and Amy Sprecher launched this series honoring Voza’s immeasurable contribution to the arts, supporting new filmmakers and playwrights. This year: six staged readings in partnership with CCNY.

Luther Isler: Artist-in-Residence
NHT established its first artist-in-residence program, honoring poet, playwright, performer and educator Luther Isler. We proudly produced the debut of his extraordinary new work, The Ballad of Dog God.

harlem is…
The exhibition and public programs continued to grow, proudly serving thousands of visitors locally, nationally and globally.

As Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over till it’s over.” So stay tuned.

A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM… A LIVING LEGACY & THE PASSING OF THE TORCH 🔥✨

What an incredible and emotional Great Day in Harlem with my father, living legend Voza Rivers. ❤️

This year carried an especially powerful meaning.

We gathered while remembering Lloyd Williams, whose vision, leadership and dedication alongside my father helped shape and sustain HARLEM WEEK for decades, and Sharon Morris, my father’s beloved late wife and a proud, active member of the Harlem community who loved Harlem, its people and its extraordinary spirit. 🕊️❤️
Their absence was felt, but so was the incredible legacy of community, love and service that continues.

For decades, Voza Rivers and Lloyd Williams worked to build, nurture and champion HARLEM WEEK, helping create something far greater than an annual celebration — an institution celebrating the culture, history, people and heartbeat of Harlem.

And now… the torch has been passed. 🔥

This new generation of Harlem leaders stepped forward to execute their first HARLEM WEEK without its longtime founders at the helm — and they did a phenomenal job! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽

Perhaps the most beautiful part for me was simply watching my dad take it all in.

Voza was greeted with so much love by friends old and new. There he stood — beaming with pride and light — watching something he devoted so much of his life to continue to grow, evolve and thrive in the hands of the next generation.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul joined the celebration, along with Keith Wright, Inez Dickens, Jumaane Williams, Cordell Cleare, Yusef Salaam, and so many other elected officials, community leaders, friends and supporters who came together to honor Harlem’s past, celebrate its present and embrace its future.

🎶 The sounds of the incredible Impact Repertory Theatre filled the air, reminding us once again of the talent, creativity and soul that Harlem continues to give the world.

There was music. History. Remembrance. Joy. Leadership. Community. And continuity.

But for me, there was something even more meaningful:

I got to stand beside my father and watch him witness his living legacy. ❤️

Now THAT was A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM.

Harlem showed up and showed OUT.

Music in the air. Dancing everywhere. Old friends finding each other. New memories being made. Generations coming together. And our community doing what it has done for more than five decades: showing up for Harlem.

From HARLEM WEEK co-founder Voza Rivers and IMPACT Repertory Theatre, to L. Adé Williams sharing the stage with the next generation, to Christopher Williams, Ray Chew & the All-Star Band, DJ S-1, Bugsy and our WBLS family, the soundtrack matched the energy of thousands of New Yorkers filling Grant’s Tomb.

Culture. Community. Music. Joy. Harlem.

There’s nothing quite like A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM.

We were also honored to welcome leaders from across New York State, New York City and Harlem who continue to show up for this community. Thank you to our elected officials and community leaders for celebrating with us and for your continued partnership with HARLEM WEEK.

And none of this happens alone.

A special thank you to our sponsors and partners, including Black Health Matters, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, MetroPlusHealth and Mount Sinai Health System, whose support helps make HARLEM WEEK possible. And to the exhibitors, vendors, small businesses and entrepreneurs who helped bring the streets and grounds to life throughout A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM.

And to our partners across New York City government, including NYC Parks, NYPD and the many city agencies and teams working alongside us behind the scenes to bring these events to life, thank you.

Most importantly, thank you, Harlem.

To everyone who came out, danced, sang, celebrated, brought your families and made Grant’s Tomb feel like one giant family reunion, this day belongs to you.

And trust us, there’s more.

More moments. More performances. More highlights from A GREAT DAY IN HARLEM still to come.

HARLEM WEEK 2026 isn’t over yet.

This weekend, we’re taking it to 135th Street. 🔥
