Did you know?

Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to learn about new subjects once they get to school.

Story time is important for brain development, even for babies who do not talk yet. When you read with children, they are connecting the words you say to the pictures on the page and to the things in their world. All of those connections are brain connections!

Between 2015-2019 there’s been minimal increase of Black and Brown characters in children’s literature….no secret that historically white characters have had a large and consistent presence in children’s books/stories…As you look at the data above I ask you to think to yourself “why am I more likely to find books filled with animals and trucks than those filled with faces of Black and Brown children”
For those interested in learning more about the intentional creation of @blackgirl_browngirl Books join us Thursday July 1st @6pmPST / 9pm EST #changethenarrative #childrensliterature #childrensbooks #representationmatters #books #mirrors #blackcharactersmatter #browncharactersmatter #blackcommunities #browncommunities

Saw a quote that said “When you open a book and read of a character that thinks, feels and love the way you do, you feel less alone”….

We believe that when young children SEE a character that looks like them they will feel less alone in this world. According to the @cdcgov , experiences in the first 8 years of life are a foundation for future learning, health and success in life. So we say to you, representation MATTERS!

Join the Founders of @blackgirl_browngirl books Thursday July 1st 6pm PST/ 9pm EST via Instagram & Facebook Live as they share their intentional purpose for increasing the representation of Black and Brown characters in children’s literature. #representationmatters #blackrepresentation #brownrepresentation #children #childrensliterature #changethenarrative #childrensbooks #blackauthors #brownauthors #blackcommunities #browncommunities #braindevelopment #books #mirrors #windows
