What happens when artists become the artwork?

On Sept 12th we welcomed Italian curatorial duo @lensart_duo @maltitenuzzo who led NaAC artists and community members in a participatory performance. Working together to form the Third Paradise symbol, participants demonstrated what a caring, accessible world looks like.

Thank you to @cittadellarte, the Italian Cultural Institute of Toronto @iictoronto, @terzo_paradiso_rebirthday, and Matilde & Francesca for bringing this international performance to Calgary!

You are up too late and slightly giddy with excitement. Doorways of light lead you along a path, at a speed that is determined in part by how politely you lag behind whoever is in front of you, giving them space to move at their own pace. As people pass through the doorways, the slice of them that is passing through the doorway is briefly illuminated, and then disappears into darkness.

The Deep Dark by Caitlind R.C. Brown & Wayne Garrett was up on St. Patricks Island for 1 evening as part of Current, a series of public art activations presented by The New Gallery.

None of this work would be possible if artists and art workers weren't willing to work in the heat and smoke to make cool experiences possible. I am also only able to share this because a friend bought me a lens adapter, loaned me lenses, and then also got a little fed up and told me which lens to switch to for night photography.

This work reminds me that the world is beautiful most easily when others are willing to share ways to experience it beautifully

We can measure the time that's passed by looking at the growth of the little kids seen in this filmic testament. So many of them are huge now! 🌱The Wandering Island remains incomplete.... perhaps one day we will return. Perhaps it's meant to dissolve into the river.... in the meantime, here are some faces and voices from yesteryear.

Dream come true ☁️

Quick (though not entirely painless) trip to Calgary for a procedure that I’ve been waiting for and advocating to be able to access for over a decade. Graeme was an angel, facilitated a hobbly trip to the badlands, and documented everything in old-school digital which helped somehow. 👼 🦖

My journey (or whatever) with leg lymphedema isn’t over but this should help a lot, and I’m so grateful to the team at Cerulean, to the many many medical professionals who have helped me up to now, to family and friends (over the years and for offering somewhere we could stay), to the Dept. of Health for approving my request, to the Ottawa airport for having benches that facilitate being horizontal, and for apple juice and science. 🙏 🍎

Before we could flip a switch, electric light was seen as a force near miraculous. In 1874, Canadian inventors Henry Woodward and Mathew Evans patented an early light bulb in Toronto before selling it to Thomas Edison in 1879. ⚡

Opening tomorrow, August 29, The Light Fantastic explores how light evolved from a disruptive 19th-century invention to an everyday commodity, and how contemporary artists are restoring its original sense of magic. Curated by Catherine Crowston, this exhibition features immersive installations that re-infuse common domestic light with wonder.

A special thank you to the artist duo of Caitlind Brown (@incandescentcloud) and Wayne Garrett (@waynepgarrett), and to @encoretrucking for helping us get CLOUD into the gallery. Germaine Koh (@germkoh) was here installing the AGA site-specific version of The Haunting, working closely with our preparation team to bring this exhibition to life!
