POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

One year ago, Troy and I landed in Mexico City. I was a recipient of the Creative Renewal Artist Fellowship from the Indy Arts Council, and this trip was the renewal “thing” I was to do.

When I applied in 2024, I detailed what all had been going on in my family in the previous year, with my mom’s dementia advancing while my stepdad had had a double lung transplant. On top of that, work responsibilities; art, mural, and creative commissions, (barely) keeping on top of things at FC9, a former art “friend” who had picked that time to go on a tirade and took out his frustrations on me and a few other artists…who had nothing to do with what he was upset about. My younger sister was mad at me for reasons I still don’t understand. There was just…a lot. I think my exact quote was, “I just want to go someplace for a week where no one can reach me.”

Boy, did I get my wish.

In any case, I’d detailed a plan to go to CDMX. I had a list of things I wanted to do, some bucket-list sort of things, some experiential or educational things, in a way, and some things related to my family. I took Troy along for the ride as I didn’t want to go by myself, and just him and I being together without the world would be refreshing as well.

It’s taken me a year now to figure out what this trip meant, what it meant to be creatively renewed. I haven’t really posted about the trip because I wasn’t entirely sure just how to detail the story.

A lot has happened in this year since, so much. I figured, why not? Let’s go. Settle in, kids, it’s storytelling time. For the next couple of days, I’ll post the tale in accordance with the character limits, starting with tonight. Some of the pics were taken by me, but—and you’ll soon find out why—most are taken by Troy. Will it be a bit of a play-by-play? Sure. Will there be some big moral to the story at the end? I dunno, maybe. It depends on how open I feel like being to you all.

In any case, come with us to Mexico City.

Had such a great weekend with @kyleahurd and his wonderful fiancée @ericao182. Was fortunate enough to cap it all off with my first visit to the Ryman. Even better to have shared it with my show bro. I never thought I’d see a show there, let alone a Billy Strings show. It was so surreal. #motherchurch #theryman #ryman #rymanauditorium
