Fays Adventure Series in Kyrgyzstan : Part 1

“Choosing Discomfort”

I’ve just returned from the first trip of many from the Fays Adventure Series, and it began in Kyrgyzstan.

These trips run only twice a year, and every one of them will take place in a completely different location.

They are my way of inviting people into my world and into what I value as a professional alpinist: adventure, exploration, and time spent in places that are far from easy or predictable.

During our trip to Kyrgyzstan, we slept together in yurts, sharing the space as a group, tucked into our sleeping bags while the temperatures dropped to around -10°C at night.

There was no phone signal, no outside noise, and the sky above us was filled with stars and the Milky Way.

Evenings ended early, mornings started slowly.

One evening, we sat together and painted what we had seen during the day, trying to capture how the Tian Shan felt rather than how it looks in photographs.

Skiing in such a remote part of the Tian Shan meant there were no crowds and there was no pressure. From the summits, we could see endless mountain ranges stretching into the distance, lines that stay with you and turn into future dreams.

In a world that prioritises comfort, choosing discomfort is a way to reconnect… with ourselves, with others, and with the places we travel through.
