Please join us and our partners @miamiresilience and @bpcparks at @climateweeknyc for our symposium “Absorb, Adapt, Thrive: Nature-Based Infrastructure for Coastal Resilience” at Wagner Pavilion. This day-long event includes interactive workshops, tours, and conversations that will strategize how we scale nature-based solutions that tackle the challenges facing our communities. Session 01 will bring together researchers on the cutting edge for an interactive conversation about how we move from knowledge to implementation. Session 02 will explore how nature-based infrastructure supports community resilience in three geographies at three different scales. What will it take to mainstream nature-based solutions at scale in our cities? Session 03 moves the conversation from “interesting projects” to “system-wide design and adoption.” The day will conclude with a Resilience Happy Hour and site tours of South Battery Park City Resiliency and Battery Park City Resilience.

The SOM Foundation and the @makcenter for Art and Architecture are pleased to announce that Linda C. Samuels (@lcsamuels) has been awarded the 2026 Researcher-in-Residence. Samuels will receive a $5,000 stipend and a five-week summer residency in Los Angeles at the MAK Center’s Mackey Apartments designed by R.M. Schindler for work related to her research proposal, “Sixth Street Viaduct as Next Generation Infrastructure.” Linda C. Samuels is Professor and Chair of urban design at the Sam Fox School at Washington University in St. Louis and the inaugural Director of Sustainable Design and Environmental Justice. Samuels’s research focuses on infrastructural opportunism—leveraging investment in large-scale systems to create more socially and environmentally productive public works. She teaches inter-disciplinary urban design studios and seminars on Infrastructural Urbanism, urban history and theory, and alternative sustainability metrics. In 2023, she completed an Infrastructure Equity Scorecard Pilot Project for the City of Los Angeles and a produce rescue and distribution mapping project for LA-based nonprofit, Food Forward. Samuels was co-PI on Mobility For All By All, an interdisciplinary project aiming to increase the benefits of St. Louis’s MetroLink expansion for local residents living along the alignment. Previously, Samuels was the director of the Sustainable City Project at the University of Arizona and a Senior Research Associate at UCLA’s cityLAB where she co-developed and co-ran the WPA 2.0 (Working Public Architecture) design competition. This week, we collaborated with @washusamfoxschool and @washuasla to host a waterfront design workshop in St Louis, bringing together civic, nonprofit, and academic leaders from across the region to imagine how we can create a more vibrant and resilient downtown riverfront. The workshop was a first step in bringing together these leaders and beginning the conversation about what a process might look like for collective action along the banks of the Mississippi River. This workshop is the latest in a series of workshops along the Mississippi River Watershed as part of our collaboration with the Walton Family Foundation. I’m beyond excited to return to my alma mater @washusamfoxschool to discuss my work as a practitioner bringing together policy and design to embed resilience in the built environment. My time studying landscape architecture and urban design at WashU helped shape how I view the role of designers in shaping the built environment and I’m excited to learn from the students, faculty, and alumni about how they are continuing to have an impact in the current political and regulatory environment. PRODUCE PARK | Sixth Street Bridge, Los Angeles, CA A collaborative project with Ricardo Alvarado and Kennedy Webb. In between Boyle Heights and the Arts District in Los Angeles, spanning over 10 acres, is Produce Park Los Angeles. Besides offering Angelenos places for recreation (basketball courts, bike paths, multi-purpose stage), Produce Park offers nearby communities an abundance of food. There is produce on site grown at a mass scale within a hydroponics system, one spanning the underside of the bridge’s length and another over the LA river portion. The produce is distributed to the community through a farmers’ market that helps fill in a gap of coverage by LA Farmers markets. Food is also brought in through food recovery, stored, and redistributed on site as well. Lastly, the park is landscaped with culturally significant fruit trees, herbs, and vegetables that connect the two communities through food cultivation, preparation, and feasts. POV: You co-create regenerative land art with the MEA community and come out feeling renewed, connected to mother earth, and like a part of something bigger. ✨️ Thank you to everyone! Those who we met, and to all involved in facilitating the weekend, as well as those who participated in building the 7 Point Center with us at the MEA Homecoming Ceremony. The experience of being on the land and seeing this installation come to life at their new Rising Circle Ranch is beyond words. We still resonate with a deep sense of gratitude and love from being a part of this community and capacity building site, now standing as a gift to the earth, and an anchor for current and future cohorts of MEA to enjoy and explore the site. ✨️ About the Origin Ritual | 7 point center ✨️ Join us & and our animal friends on a procession to the 7 POINT CENTER of Rising Circle Ranch, where we will mark this sacred spot with the collective creation of an enduring MEA land art legacy piece. Along the procession, you will gather seeds and sacred stones, cleanse them, and carry them to the Ceremony Site & Sound Bath. There, we will build a pattern of concentric circles orienting each of us to the four directions, mother earth, father sky, and sacred self. ✨️ In concert, the concentric rings of rocks will serve to strengthen the earth, slow the movement of water, reduce erosion, & support regeneration. The scattered seeds will take root, further stabilizing the land, and enhancing ecology.
