One of the BTS photos from the shoot.
Pankaj, the youngest member of the family and the soul of our film, was intrigued by the small lighting contraption that we had made. Without electricity, the space of the cave at night would expand in the shadows thrown by the mitti tel (paraffin oil) lamps. Surrounded by a cattle herd and rock mountain walls without phones, lights and television, the idea of what makes a home changed as easily as the shadows dancing across the cave.

The film will be available online on the @diff.india website between 29 Oct - 4 Nov.

Sunday evening’s #UIFF2021 programme kicks off with the ✨ Iris Awards ceremony ✨ where the winners from the Under 18, Childhood in the pandemic, and Open categories will be announced, as well as the Iris 75 grand prize. We will be joined by some very special guests so make sure you’re there – in person or online!

After the awards, we will close out this year’s film festival with our “Children in the Pandemic” programme featuring:

🎬 In ‘Don’t Say Anything’, a young refugee in Palermo reflects on the love-hate relationship she has with her chaotic adopted city during the COVID-19 pandemic.

🎬 A city boy spends the lockdown period in a rural village with his family where he discovers wonders and dangers he has never encountered before in ‘The Getaway’. @festagent.ru @nikitpopkov

🎬 When COVID-19 hit, 320 million pupils in #India transitioned to e-learning. ‘Mahalle's School: Family Going Live’ tells the story of two of these students.

🎬 Seung-Jae tries to turn his home into a school. Watching endless video lectures, the pressure explodes in the form of dance in ‘Home School’ from #SouthKorea.

A few more shorts I watched at the online Dharamshala International Film Festival:
.
Hena Ashraf's 'The Return' maps a tale of loss and longing, the kind of film that slowly grows on you. Ashraf takes us along her journey of coming to terms with the sudden death of her father, through the making of a film. We are silent spectators to her loss, perhaps magnified by a relationship that was strained, and a gradual discovery of the father by the daughter through an unfinished story and her own identity that struggles to fit in.
'Succulent' by Amrita Bagchi is an extremely interesting watch, of a slightly terrifying world (which is perhaps not very far) where relationships work like algorithms with replaceable nodes. As a woman works at an agency that provides a replacement for loved ones, questions arise about the quantification of emotions, the strains of providing warmth, and to me, the film is an eye-opener that nudges us to think about the future of human relationships.
'Khabsurat' by Ashutosh Pathak, starring Naina Sareen and Shardul Bhardwaj is another engaging watch, that raises questions about women's freedom, and limitations to the rights they hold over their own bodies. Gripping visuals and a brilliant background score by Neel Adhikari bring out the best of the storyline.
Also watched Alisha Tejpal's 'Lata', a third-eye view of the working class in upper-class households, the places they call home, and their integration with the spaces they inhabit. 'Mahalle's School - Family Going Live' by Akshay Pradip Ingle explores life in the middle of a pandemic, shifts to digital education and its repercussions, through the story of the Mahalle family and its many members.
.
Streaming at online.diff.co.in till 14th November, 2021.
