Before he became the tallest goalie in NHL history, Cooper Black was just a kid from northern Michigan with a dream.

Shout out to Taylor Carey and everyone else who’s been here from the start 🤝

Congrats Coop! Proud of you pal.

Keep going.

Should goalie conditioning always be position-specific?

Not necessarily.

Ian Clark likes using crease movements to make conditioning relevant to the position — but makes an important exception.

If the bag skate is a consequence for the team, the goalies are doing it too.

They’re part of the team.

And Ian believes goalies carry a leadership responsibility that is often demonstrated through their actions.

In stance positions, up and down, goalies should have a slight forward skew of balance.

FORWARD BALANCE
On the knees this places the goalie over their knees; on the feet this places the goalie over their toes.

STAY AWAY FROM THE HEALS
In both cases, the balance objective is to skew forward; not backward towards the goalie’s heals.

TOES AND ATHLETICISM
When on the feet, the activation of the toes is incredibly important to athletic function.

ACTIVATE THE TOES
Imagine the toes as the goalie’s claws or talons. As weight is applied to them, they spread and activate as they load and take on a greater role.

QUICK AS A CAT
If the goalie wants cat-like reflexes and quickness – activate and engage the toes with a slight forward skew of weight and balance.

Your biggest enemy in the crease might be your own mind 🧠

Devin Cooley recently talked about how his unconscious mind plays better than his conscious mind.

And there’s actual psychology and neuroscience behind that.

It’s also the exact reason I created Trust Your Instincts Goaltending.

The goal isn’t to stop thinking. It’s to prepare, study film, develop good habits and understand your game so well that you don’t have to overthink every decision.

That’s where coaching, mentorship and mental preparation make a difference.

Practice consciously. Play instinctively.

Do you want to free your mind and starting trusting your instincts?

WHERE THE STARS OF TOMORROW TRAIN TODAY 😤
•
Young athletes play through pressure from the game and from live. Getting on the ice, being able to learn, make mistakes in a save environment helps get their mind off of all that and gets back to having fun 🤩 WVMHA GOALIE WORLD !

PFGS MENTORSHIP PROGRAM 🤩
•
Part of our In-season development program is our mentorship programs. As goalies move up divisions, get older we provide opportunity for them to give back by mentoring young goalies in their MHA’s U7-U9. This can lead into becoming a paid instructor with PFGS. Or simply use them as volunteer hours for secondary school.

IN-SEASON PHASE #1 | REGISTRATION NOW OPEN!

Our In-Season Phase #1 Program is designed to turn those early-season lessons into focused development.

Late reads. Extra movement. Poor routes. Rebound problems. Lost positioning. Details that cost saves.

Game play exposes everything. In-Season Phase #1 is built to identify those details, attack them in training, and turn them into better game performance.

THE SEASON HAS STARTED. THE DEVELOPMENT DOESN’T STOP.

Throughout Phase #1, GTI coaches will work with goaltenders to:
→ Refine technical details and movement efficiency
→ Improve reads, positioning and decision-making
→ Correct habits exposed through game play
→ Execute under game-like speed, traffic and pressure

📅 SUNDAYS, MONDAY, TUESDAYS & WEDNESDAYS
📍 Progressive Small Group Development

Development shouldn’t stop when the season starts. It should become more specific, more purposeful, and more accountable.

DON’T JUST GET THROUGH THE SEASON. GET BETTER THROUGH IT.

While the goalie’s technical engine drives movement and positioning, the upper body does the reading.

STABLE UPPER BODY
For the goalie to play with clear eyes and clear mind, upper body stability is vital.

LEGS AND FEET ARE ACTIVE
This means that while the lower body is active, the torso, arms, hands, and head must move with stability.

ARMS AND HANDS ARE STABLE
The reason is simple. If, for example, the hands and arms are swinging or out of control, this instability will extend to the head and eyes.

TRAINING FOCUS
When training, it is very important that goalies focus on this stability in the upper body so that their supercomputer is stable and can be fully leveraged.

STABILITY DELIVERS CLARITY
Instability means clouded visuals and decision making. Stability delivers clear eyes and clear mind – essential attributes of the elite netminder.

HAPPY THANKSGIVING FROM GTI NORTH

THIS YEAR, WE HAVE EVEN MORE TO BE THANKFUL FOR.

This season marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter for The Goalie Training Institute — bringing GTI NORTH home to Barrie and expanding our development system into the community where so much of our story began.

We’re incredibly thankful for every goaltender and family who has trusted us, every coach who has committed to our standard, every partner who continues to support our vision, and everyone who has welcomed GTI North into the Barrie and Simcoe County hockey community.

This expansion is more than a new location. It’s an opportunity to develop the next generation of goaltenders, create new opportunities for local athletes, and continue raising the standard of goaltender development in our hometown.

We’re proud of what we’ve built.
We’re grateful for where we are.
And we’re even more excited about where GTI North is going next.

From our GTI North family to yours — Happy Thanksgiving!

THE NEXT CHAPTER IS JUST GETTING STARTED.

DEVELOPMENT STARTS HERE.
