In 2014, Maya moved to Lagos, Nigeria, determined to help build Africa’s startup ecosystem.

Her original goal was ambitious: raise a venture capital fund to invest in African startups.

However, with little experience and no track record, investors repeatedly turned her down.

Instead of giving up, she launched Ingressive, a market-entry and business advisory firm that helped global companies and investors expand into Africa.

The success of that business eventually gave her the credibility and network needed to pursue her original vision.

Maya Horgan Famodu @mayahorganfamodu was born on March 24, 1991, to a Nigerian father and an American mother. Although she has strong Nigerian roots, she spent most of her childhood and teenage years in Minnesota, USA, where her family faced significant financial challenges.

She attended Pomona College, earning a degree in Environmental Analysis, and later completed a Pre-Law Program at Cornell University. After graduation, she worked at JPMorgan Chase in New York before deciding to pursue entrepreneurship and investment.

The firm has since backed some of Africa’s most successful startups, including @paystackhq , which was acquired by Stripe for more than $200 million, as well as companies such as Carry1st, Bamboo, and 54gene.

Beyond investing, Maya co-founded @ingressive4good Ingressive for Good (I4G), a nonprofit that provides scholarships, technical training, and job placement opportunities for African youth.

The organization has helped train hundreds of thousands of aspiring tech professionals across the continent.

Maya’s achievements have earned her global recognition.

She has been named @forbesunder30 Forbes Africa 30 Under 30 and Forbes U.S. 30 Under 30, becoming a two-time honoree.

She has also been recognized as a World Economic Forum Young Global Leader, a Kauffman Fellow, a UN Most Influential Person of African Descent, and was named Young Female Business Leader of the Year by The Top10 Magazine.
