Being able to do something and being able to teach it are different skills.

Observation, clear explanations and useful feedback are central to how I approach instructor development.

Repetition can strengthen a useful habit. It can also make an unhelpful one very familiar.

I prefer a clear target, honest feedback and time to apply it. That gives the next attempt a purpose.

What skill would you choose for a focused practice session?

The small things are often worth a closer look.

A few seconds from a dive, and a reminder of the attitude I value in training: pay attention, stay curious, keep learning.

The task gets your attention. The rest of the dive still deserves it.

Foundations training is an opportunity to work on how your skills fit together—with observation, feedback and time to refine. This is a moment from a skills exercise, not a complete demonstration.

Which skill uses the most of your attention?

Finishing a task is only part of the picture. What happened to your position, breathing comfort and awareness of the team along the way?

In training, I want enough space to notice those changes and work on them. Looking busy is not a learning outcome.

Save this question for your next supervised skills session.

Being a capable diver and helping another person become one are connected skills. They are not interchangeable.

@innerspace_explorers instructor training addresses demonstrating skills and communicating them to others. My interest is in making learning clear, observable and useful.

Message “Instructor” if that is the direction you want to explore!

One good frame is not a trim strategy.

Video lets you look at the approach, the task and what happens afterwards. It is much more useful when you describe what you can actually see, review it with your instructor and choose one specific thing to improve.

Then film again. Look for repeatable control, not a flattering screenshot.

Save this for your next training video review.

Horizontal doesn’t automatically mean neutral.

Trim describes your orientation in the water. Buoyancy describes your tendency to rise, sink or remain neutral. You can look beautifully horizontal and still be changing depth.

For forward swimming, a streamlined horizontal position reduces drag. Consistent depth control is a separate skill. We develop both together, from the beginning.

Physics remains remarkably unimpressed by your certification card.

Save this distinction, and follow for calm, practical explanations of DIR-style diving.

“Good dive” is a fine start. It is not much of a debrief.

Before the details fade, ask what worked, what changed, what each teammate noticed and what you will practise next.

Keep the discussion specific and curious. The aim is to understand the dive and make the next session more useful—not to win the conversation.

Save these four questions for your team.

The basics aren’t beginner skills.

Buoyancy, trim and propulsion remain part of the job as dives become more complex. More equipment adds tasks; it does not remove the need for control.

Build the foundations early. Keep refining them throughout your diving.

A new certification card does not persuade physics to make an exception.

Follow for precise, practical explanations of DIR-style diving.
