The second image made with Shannyn at @inroomsfoundation. I had a vague idea for the setup of the shot and tie, as well as wanting to use a collaging aspect for the mirror. Layering lifts is actually such a pain, because the tooth of the paper gives the Polaroid emulsion lift something to hold onto. When you’re layering lifts on lifts, it becomes a VERY slippery and finicky process. In the initial draft of this piece, I had left the mirror as-shot, but immediately knew that was wrong and had to go back to the drawing board to get this result. Shannyn came prepared with both a horse AND a cow skull, and I came with the flowers. I am massively proud, hugely thankful for the process and results, as well as for the use of Brittany’s beautiful space (happy birthday!). @inroomsfoundation has just achieved a funding apparatus that will allow the foundation to grow, and I am excited for that what means for New Orleans, as well as Brittany’s vision for the community and her beautiful work 🩸♥️ “Dream of the Heretic Witch”, 2026. 10.5 x 15 in, layered and collaged Polaroid emulsion lifts. #photographer

After trudging through the French Quarter with both a suitcase full of skulls and a scythe (and antiques and a vase full of gladiolus!), Brittany (@inroomsfoundation) welcomed Shannyn and me into her beautiful space to bring these images to life. It’s truly a great day when I can collaborate and share both space and energy with others. I learned a lot through the printing and lifting process as well, which is never a given but always a delight. Thank you Shannyn, for being down to try and thank you Brittany, for opening your beautiful studio to us! “The Invocation”, 2026. 9.75 x 10 in, layered and collaged Polaroid emulsion transfers.

Wide Open Art is thrilled to announce our very first retreat experience to begin 2027 in New Orleans with artists Brittany Markert and Mark de Paola. ✨ @_inrooms @markdepaolastudio @depaolapictures Built upon a twenty-year artistic collaboration between Brittany Markert and Mark de Paola, “Portraiture and Trust: The Creative Exchange” considers the powerful relationship between artist and collaborator, and the trust, vulnerability, and shared intention that create the space for honesty to emerge in front of the lens. A photograph has the immense power to reveal memory, the subconscious, and the interior worlds that shape how we experience one another. Drawing from two decades of working together, supporting one another, and evolving alongside one another as artists, Brittany and Mark invite participants to consider how a space of trust can allow psychological depth, energy, and unspoken narratives to enter the portrait. Through photographing, conversation, and close mentorship, the retreat asks what must exist between two people before a meaningful portrait can exist, and what stories can emerge when we create the space for them to be revealed. Head to wideopenart.com under “Retreats” to learn more about this experience and to submit your application via the form provided. The Inner Room: A Four-Day Self-Portrait Intensive November 19–22, 2026 · New Orleans Limited to four participants. For more than a decade, self-portraiture has been the primary way I express myself through photography. This November, I am opening up a unique immersive e experience to learn this process more deeply for the first time. The Inner Room is an intimate four-day intensive exploring self-portraiture as psychological inquiry, performance, experimentation, and visual world-building. We will work with light, environment, gesture, objects, movement, symbolism, intuition, and intentional image-making through lectures, demonstrations, guided exercises, sustained shooting, and individual mentorship. An important part of the intensive will also be collaboration. Participants will work in rotating pairs, learning how to articulate and direct their own images while supporting another artist’s process. This structure of team work has been integral in my own process over the years. My intention in offering workshops is not to teach anyone how to make photographs that look like mine, It is to help each participant become more conscious of their own visual language and unique voice. The inaugural intensive will be held November 19–22 in New Orleans and is limited to four participants. Applications are now open. One scholarship position available.
