Extended-range electric vehicles (EREVs) are gaining momentum, especially in the US, with customers turning away from fully electric vehicles in favor of hybrids. But not everyone is convinced there’s a need for another type of powertrain.

Mercedes-Benz doesn’t see much demand for EREVs among its customers, arguing that its plug-in hybrids already offer enough electric range for daily driving without giving up the convenience of a gasoline engine.

Christoph Starzynski, Mercedes-Benz’s Vice President of Product Strategy and Product Steering, explained the company’s position to Motor1 when asked about the appeal of range-extender technology. He believes that the Mercedes lineup already has a compelling solution:

‘[We] have a [plug-in] hybrid with 100-plus kilometers [of range]. For me, for the day-to-day drive, that is more than enough. [...] What else do you need? I know that there are areas in the world where there is a higher demand [for EREVs], but not for us, from our customer perspective. We don’t see that.’

Mercedes doesn’t think more electric range automatically makes a plug-in hybrid more appealing. Starzynski points to the company’s current fleet of plug-in hybrids, which offer upwards of 77 miles (124 kilometers) of electric range in Europe, as a practical solution for everyday driving.

With DC fast charging available on those models, he also argues that owners can recharge during longer stops and still have a gasoline engine available when they need it.

Mercedes-AMG is bringing its sports car DNA to the full-size electric SUV segment. The new GT SUV is officially here with up to 1,153 horsepower, a 0-60 mile-per-hour time of 2.4 seconds, and DC fast charging at up to 710 kilowatts.

The 2028 Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is the first full-size SUV developed entirely in-house by AMG. It’s also the second model based on the brand’s new AMG.EA electric performance platform, following the recently unveiled AMG GT 4-Door Coupe.

Three versions will be available at launch: the GT53 SUV, GT55 SUV, and range-topping GT63 SUV. The electric SUV is expected to arrive at US dealerships in summer 2027.

The new Tesla Roadster is finally here.

Tesla has revealed its long-awaited next-generation Roadster, and it looks completely bonkers. Nearly nine years after the original prototype debuted, Tesla is promising some insane details for its new Roadster:

- 0-60 MPH In Under 1.0 Second
- A Fan Underneath The Car Generating 2 Gs Of Grip
- Thrusters From SpaceX

The company says the car can corner with enough force to make it look like it’s breaking the laws of physics. Oh, and Tesla claims the Roadster can literally fly.

Production is scheduled for 2028. What do you think?

Toyota has filed a patent application describing a way to fake a manual transmission in an electric car. The timing lines up with the all-electric Lexus LFA, which is expected to arrive in 2027.

The system uses torque control instead of a clutch. It could end up connected the LFA Concept’s steering wheel paddles.

The application, first reported by CarBuzz, lays out how an EV can mimic the jolt of a sequential racing gearbox without any clutch pedal at all. Lexus has not confirmed the tech is headed for production.

The patent application outlines a system that shapes electric motor torque over a set period to recreate the feel of changing gears, even though an EV has no gears to change. Instead of a conventional transmission, software manages how power reaches the wheels and when.

Toyota’s filing explains the thinking plainly: operating a clutch can be troublesome for drivers accustomed to automatics, and most EV buyers will probably have had little to no experience with a real manual.
