Some birds travel thousands of miles for winter, while the Red Avadavat chooses to stay close—quietly weaving itself into the grasslands and leaving unforgettable memories in the hearts of birding enthusiasts. 🍓❤️

A tiny bird with a remarkable presence, reminding us that sometimes the most beautiful moments are found close to home. Truly, a little gem of the remaining grasslands near Chandigarh India .

🦆❄️ What an exceptional winter for geese! ❄️🦆

The Christmas period brought a real influx of Russian White-fronted Geese and Tundra Bean Geese across the UK, and I was lucky enough to catch up with both locally. In fact, White-fronted Goose ended up being one of my final additions to my patch year list — always a satisfying way to round things off!

Then in early February, another wave of Russian White-fronted Geese arrived, with thousands recorded nationwide and some record-breaking counts locally. I’ve been fortunate to see several flocks over and on my patch at Deeping Lakes, including nine birds that dropped in briefly last weekend.

For context, White-fronted Goose isn’t an annual species at Deeping Lakes, so seeing different flocks on three of four days last weekend was exceptional. Locally, counts of 70+ in a couple of flocks have been remarkable — a winter to remember for goose watching in Lincolnshire.

Those eyes. 👀🦉

The Long-eared Owls at Deeping Lakes LWT have been a real puzzle this winter. Since the scrub was cleared between the hide and their usual roost tree, they’ve taken to tucking themselves deeper into the ivy — making even a glimpse a challenge.

Occasionally though, one perches out in the open. Sadly, the lack of cover means they spot you entering the hide instantly. On another visit, two were already flushed and one ended up briefly across the gully, perfectly posed. No time to fit the 2x converter, but I was lucky to grab these few shots regardless. They're one of the trickiest species to photograph well — always seen, but rarely this clearly.

🪶 Bitterns & Otters — patch magic! 🦦

Yesterday, we confirmed not one, but two Bitterns on my local patch at Deeping Lakes. I was lucky enough to grab this shot as one crash-landed into the reeds after a short flight — later flushed by a passing Otter! 🤯

Fifteen years ago, I wouldn’t have dreamed of either species becoming regular here — incredible to see how much the habitat has matured. 🌾💚

Male Eurasian Sparrowhawk (Accipter nisus) from last Autumn.
.
I do occasionally get sparrowhawks in my garden, though getting a male sitting and posing for this long in such an open location just underneath my window was a treat.
.
Males are 25% smaller than females (a large difference even for birds of prey), preferring to take small prey like tits and finches rather than the starlings and pigeon-sized prey that the female can take.

▪️Marsh Harrier▪️

First observation - 2nd picture (from afar, I admit 😅) of the marsh harrier. Very nice to watch it skim the reeds, then dive into them to pounce on its prey.

I hope you like this photo!

Tell me all about it in the comments😁
