Open Source Open Mic! 6-9pm, 10/22, @interzonecorvallis !! Giving the people what they want 🎤 Sign up starts at 5:30, freestyle cypher starts at 8 or whenever we want it to! Bring your beats, your tracks, your bars, your melodies, etc

We will be focusing on hip-hop but nobody turned away for lack of bars. Play us a track you’re working on, perform a little mini-set, beatbox for the people, sing a song, recite a poem etc. this is a free and open celebration of audio expression. Invite your friends :)

We will close the night out with a freestyle cypher where we will share the mic, rip bars over sick beats, and gas each other up regardless of acumen 🌌 I’m hoping we can get a little beatbox jam sesh going for a bit.

After years of explaining the mechanics of a freestyle cypher to disappointed would-be performers, I’m hoping we can get a good and fun chunk of you out to rock the mic, share your sounds, etc.

Oregon and California Trail emigrants passing through this stretch of Idaho’s Snake River country saw the narrow passage and surrounding rocks as a perfect place for an ambush. They began calling it “Massacre Rocks” out of fear for such an attack. Fighting eventually did come in August of 1862–but several miles east of the rocks themselves, where ten emigrants were killed.

The danger changed the road west. Conflict along this section of the trail helped push travelers toward Goodale’s Cutoff, an alternate route across southern Idaho. In 1863, seven out of every ten wagons traveling from Fort hall toward Boise took the cutoff instead.

Some travelers left something behind. At nearby Register Rock, emigrants painted and carved their names into the stone before continuing west. Inscriptions from the trail era survive—including names left in axle grease in 1850, while records document others dating to 1849.

More than 175 years later, you can still find the names of people who stopped here in their way to somewhere else.

The railroad moved. The roads changed. The little pine stayed put.

When Union Pacific built across Sherman Mountain in the 1860s, this limber pine was already growing from a crack in the granite. The original main line passed about 50 miles south of it. And that’s where one of Wyoming’s better railroad stories begins: tradition holds that surveyors deliberately shifted the route to spare the tree—and that locomotive firemen later stopped to give it a drink from their water buckets. The story was already being repeated on old postcards, though today it belongs more properly to railroad lore than documented fact.

The railroad moved south in 1901, but travelers kept coming. Its abandoned grade became a wagon road; the Lincoln Highway passed Tree Rock beginning in 1913, followed by U.S. 30 and eventually Interstate 80. The little tree became such a recognizable roadside landmark that early motorists made it a favorite subject for postcards and photographs.

No one knows the tree’s age. The rock underneath it is considerably less mysterious: Precambrian Sherman granite formed more than a billion years ago.

After trains, wagons and generations of automobiles, Tree Rock is still there—growing in what looks like about the least sensible place in Wyoming to plant a tree.
