The 2026 Red Gauntlet Challenge is in the books! The world’s only wooden classic 3v3 team race returned to Northeast Harbor, sailed on Somes Sound in International One-Designs for the first time in over two decades. Once the fog lifted, a gorgeous 7–9 knot southerly set the stage — NEHF racing the dark-hulled boats, KYC in the light-colored hulls.

The Northeast Harbor Fleet took the best-of-seven series 4–1 over Kollegewidgwok Yacht Club — but the score doesn’t tell the whole story. Racing was razor-close: come-from-behind plays, mark traps, passbacks, and lead changes right to the finish were a constant theme all afternoon. KYC came out swinging with a dominant sweep in Race 4, but NEHF closed it out with a clutch play-2 in a chaotic Race 5 to lift the Gauntlet. The win extends NEHF’s all-time series lead to 8–6.

Huge thanks to our umpires, Sam Madden and Norman Reid, who delivered on-the-water justice and kept the racing clean, fair, and transparent. ⚖️

Congrats and thank you to every sailor who made it happen:

NEHF — Bill Smith, Steve Madeira, David Folger, Chris Groobey, Lisa Brown Ehrhart, John Henry Jr., Terra Ehrhart, Chris Booher, Scott Lawliss, Tom Fremont-Smith, Ned Johnston, Rob Van Alen, Henry Brauer, Eliot Hack, Charlotte Croteau

A wet, windy, and wild week at the 2026 IOD World championship is in the books! All three FIYC teams finished top five in the world and the 2026 champion is Peter Wickwire/Team Storm from Chester YC (Canada). A well deserved victory—congratulations @pwickwire !

Charlie Van Voorhis/Team Jester: 2nd overall
Jonathan Farrar/Team Zallee: 4th overall
John Burnham/Team Norwood: 5th overall

To say the regatta was challenging would be an understatement: the six straight days of sailing saw a variety of mostly breezy conditions—but Thursday and Friday pushed the envelope with wind speeds in the 22-30 knot range and 5’ swells. The final race saw regatta winner Wickwire lose his mast after rounding the windward mark and Team Zallee death rolling downwind before broaching twice with the spinnaker up before recovering and still rounding the leeward mark in third. Thankfully there were no major injuries - but bumps, bruises, and swollen body parts were widespread—reminders of the war stories that we will be telling for many years.

But the journey is not over quite yet! Norwegian Wood, Etesian, and Creole left Marblehead this morning on their return sail to home waters. We wish them safety and good luck—congratulations to all competitors—and our thanks to Eastern Yacht Club and the IOD WCA for putting together such a memorable week.
