The reviews are in and church is officially in session. 📖🙌

The critics are obsessed. And bookstagram? Bookstagram is not okay (affectionate) — "This book is a time, y'all."

Literary fiction that reads like your favorite reality show: The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman is the next move from a National Book Award finalist, and it is JUICY. Scandal, secrets, sequins, and a pageant full of Jesus' disciples if they had been a group of mean girls.

Swipe to see why critics and readers can't stop talking. 👉

📅 Preorder now, because you will want to have this one on release day 9/29

Thank you so much @marinerbooks and @deeshaphilyaw for including me in this experience. I’m so excited for the rest of the world to get to know Schar and continue the discussion about The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman.

And lol I really did enjoy catching up with all of the content creators there 😅 I know I know we didn’t have to talk about the book the whole time LMAO

Everything about this trip was so thoughtful and carefully curated. From the ice cream shop and book store (you all will find out about the relevance when you read the book 🥺) to the little church fans and tiaras.

It was so great to be surrounded by other content creators, who want to uplift and celebrate stories like this.

🥂 Cheers to stories and memories that stay with us long after we read the last chapter and fly back home 🫶🏾 ( I kinda ate that last line 🤭💁🏾‍♀️😂)

🤎 Until next time!

Thank you, Mariner Books and Deesha Philyaw, for a beautifully curated experience filled with joy, thoughtful conversation, incredible people, and so much Melanin 🤎It was a DREAM to celebrate the release of The True Confessions of First Lady Freedman 🫶🏾

I had the honor of being one of six content creators flown to Atlanta for 24 unforgettable hours celebrating the upcoming release of The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman by Deesha Philyaw and in just one day, we created memories I’ll hold onto for a long time.

#booksta #bookish

Stop 1: Landed at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport and was greeted by our driver.

Stop 2: Our second stop was Black-owned Sweet Stack Creamery, where I had the BEST vegan ice cream of my life. If you’re ever in Atlanta, the Super Berry Açaí flavor is an absolute must-try!!!!🫐🍓🩷

Stop 3: We explored 44th & 3rd Booksellers; a black-owned bookstore with history, charm and an amazing collection of old and new stories.

Stop 4: We checked into The Tess Hotel; it’s gorgeous, warm, elegant and the team there was so nice and accommodating.

Stop 5: We headed to the rooftop, where Deesha Philyaw welcomed every guest by name (yes...she pronounced Jordanaé correctly on the first try 🥹).

Stop 5: I also had the chance to spend time with some of my favorite people in the bookish community.

Stop 5: The wind, the vibes…it was all there🩷

Stop 6: A few of us ended the evening with dinner at Yeppa & Co.

#eatatlanta

Stop 7: The next morning we had a private brunch with Deesha ( yes, we’re on a first name basis now ☺️🤭😂)

I honestly can’t imagine a more perfect way to spend 24 hours.

If you’re looking for a novel filled with satire, messy people, self-discovery, and the freedom that can come with life after 40, The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman belongs on your TBR, available September 29, 2026.

Thank you again, Mariner Books, for the invitation and for creating such an intentional, memorable experience. 🤎

I couldn’t help but wonder…

When did book clubs become the new VIP lounge?

Maybe the hottest reservation in the city isn’t at a restaurant. Maybe it’s a room full of women who underline paragraphs, fall in love with fictional men, and somehow leave knowing a little more about themselves.

Last night was a reminder that stories don’t just live on shelves they bring strangers together, start conversations that linger long after dessert, and make a Tuesday night feel like the opening chapter of something unforgettable.

Thank you to @deeshaphilyaw, @harpercollins, and the entire team at @marinerbooks for inviting us to celebrate The True Confessions of First Lady Freeman. Here’s to beautiful books, beautiful women, and the kind of evenings that make you believe the best plot twists happen in real life.

Because sometimes the perfect love story…
is the one you have with reading. 📚🥂
