◽ Needle in a Haystack

One of the most unexpected, yet most impressive encounters of the trip was with this Rufous Hummingbird — a tiny hummingbird measuring only around 8 cm that has even made its way into the wilds of Alaska.

I had specifically been looking for this species in this coastal village, but found it in a completely unexpected spot. Near the surrounding coastal rainforest, a small path leading to the public beach was lined with scattered conifers. What initially looked like a hornet turned out to be a highly territorial hummingbird, repeatedly returning to a single perch and fiercely defending it against other hummingbirds.

Luckily, the parking lot was close by, and after almost three weeks on the road, my tripod finally got its first proper use. It was absolutely worth carrying it along — and this encounter beautifully highlighted just how remarkable the diversity of this harsh coastal landscape can be.

Qualche giorno fa ho avuto l’immensa fortuna di assistere ad un comportamento del Falco pecchiaiolo davvero stupendo da osservare. Si tratta del cosiddetto “applauso”.
È passato sopra le nostre teste, sollevando le ali sopra il dorso e facendole vibrare in una rapida sequenza elegantissima, quasi appunto volesse applaudire.
Questo affascinante comportamento può essere sia un’esibizione di parata e comunicazione, spesso osservabile nel periodo riproduttivo, ma può essere anche legato al territorio e quindi osservabile anche al di fuori del periodo riproduttivo, come accaduto nel mio caso.
Un gesto intenso e inconfondibile, capace di rendere un incontro con questo straordinario rapace ancora più emozionante.

I almost didn’t take this photo because I didn’t have a clear view of the subject. Then I thought I would try shooting through the leaves with a wide aperture, and the result surprised me. It’s not my favorite Great Blue Heron photo, but it is rather unique among all that I have captured. It has also taught me that good photos can come from less than ideal conditions. We don’t have to wait for perfection.
