MASSIVE thank you for everyone who showed up to our second event!!! 💜 This is a passion-borne effort that 4 internet friends decided to add to our already-full plates. So anyone who showed up in any way with support: it was felt!!!

We were down 50% of our organizing team in putting this one together for reasons unforeseen. But our dear friends banned together and helped us pull thru! 😭🔥 We’re still learning a lot and committed to fine-tuning! Community care and Palestinian solidarity are our guiding compasses.

Bear with us as we work to get this page updated with donation receipts, event recap videos, and next date/location announcement! ✨

Extra special THANK YOU to @ggggggggenevieve @andrea_renee.xx @ione.bleu @savannimalz and all of the gracious folks at @allpowerbooks 💜💜💜

With love and solidarity,

Mel, Yvette, and Maria

On the morning of December 13, 2020, I was awake at about 6am, looking at pictures on my phone of Soraya and reading our old messages. I didn’t sleep well that night because I couldn’t believe she was gone. While I was looking at my phone, my mom called, and something inside of me knew why she was calling. I couldn’t process what was happening.

My dad had what I am certain was Covid for a week prior. He was really sick and so was my mom and nephews. I had scheduled Covid testing for all of them but my Dad was too sick to go. The results came back positive for my mom and nephews so I was sure my dad had it. My dad was also fighting a bad knee infection and had an open wound on his knee for almost 2 years, plus he was diabetic and had lots of other ailments. So when Covid came around in 2020, I knew if he ever got it, he would most likely die. I had even said in a work Zoom meeting that same week that my biggest fear was my father getting Covid, and then it happened.

I saw my Father only twice in 2020 because I wanted to be a responsible daughter and not make my elderly parents sick if I happened to be a carrier. The week he was ill I only spoke to him on the phone once because my mom woke him up to say hi to me. At the time, I was annoyed at her for doing that, but if she had not I would have not heard him tell me “I love you mommy” one last time, albeit half asleep. My father was not a big sleeper, so when he was sleeping for the majority of that week, I knew he was very ill.

Not being able to kiss and hug my father goodbye has been one of the hardest things about losing him to Covid.

I miss him deeply and wish I could have got one more hug. But I am grateful he did not have to suffer and be in pain anymore.

My dad was a big jazz + music head and because of him, I was gifted the same passion. This is the song he ALWAYS told me he wanted to be played at his funeral if he ever died. He wanted a celebration and did not want anyone to be sad. We did not get to have a funeral for him, but I do celebrate his life everyday when I think of him.

My dad was one of a kind. Funny, sharp, intelligent and real.

I miss you and I love you Dad ❤️

💐 Flowers for my Mama while she is still here 💐

My mom had a fall late last week and she bruised her eye and arm but is already healing, thankfully 🙏🏼. But it made me realize that we are at the stage of my mother’s life where she is now more fragile 🥹

My mom will turn 86 next month and she is still very active, but she also gets tired more easily and rests more often than she did before. She still drives everywhere she needs to be, including driving from Moreno Valley to East LA to see her best friend at least once a month or every other month. She does some yard work, cooks and bakes. She made us an upside down peach cake yeaterday 😋 and always makes us the best cup of coffee. And her tortillas are legendary 🤎

My mind is so full of stressful work, life, bills, Palestine and my health but I want to make sure I appreciate my mother while she is still here ❤️
