Salvete amici! Today is Easter Sunday - Happy Easter to those who are celebrating! ⛪ It’s also the second-to-last day of Passover - so Chag Pesach Sameach to everyone celebrating! 🕍 Of course, as someone who loves any history topic related to etymology and ancient religion, I couldn’t help but notice that these two celebrations are held very close together…and that Easter is a pretty unusual word that doesn’t sound like it’s derived from Latin or Greek (spoiler alert, it isn’t!) 😉 This Sunday, let’s take a moment to dig into the etymology (and thus a bit of the origins!) of one of the most important celebrations of the Christian calendar… 👇🏻 🐣The idea of celebrating rebirth in spring is no new idea - as we know, during this month the Romans celebrated Floralia and the goddess Cybele, whose consort Attis also experience a death and rebith similar to Christ… 🌱…but the origins of the word ‘Easter’ can be found in Old English celebration of Ēastre/ Ēostre This celebration marked the entire month of April, known as ‘Eosturmonath’ - although what they were celebrating exactly is a little obscure… 🤔 Bede says that they were celebrating the goddess Ēostre - but since he’s the only historical source that mentions her, we’re not sure if she existed… 👩🏼 However, her name is believed to be linked to the Proto-Germanic root ‘austrō’, meaning ‘dawn’, and possibly connected to Indo-European roots relating to light or shining (e.g. aurora, east, aurum/gold). This would make the celebration in honour of dawn, spring and renewal ☀️ Now you might be wondering - where then does this ‘pas’ root of Easter in so many other Eurpoean languages come from - Pâques, Pascua, Πάσχα, and the Italian/Latin Pasqua? 🤔 This is where Passover comes in! 👇🏻 These are derived from the word פֶּסַח (Pesach) - the Hebrew name for Passover 🔯 Since the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus took place at the same time of year, early Christians simply adopted the term ‘Pascua’ to refer to their own celebration ✝️ So there you have it! Did you know this already? 🙂 Let me know! 👇🏻 Whatever you’re doing today, utinam hoc tempus risum, pacem et laetitiam vobis ferat ❤️

Salvete amici! Hodie est Kal. Aprilis - the first of April. A lovely springtime month dedicated to the goddess Venus! ❤️ So what are we going to do this month? 🤔 Usually, I’d write up everything here…but when there are a lot of festivals I end up going over the word count and having to write in the comments 😀 So I wrote a Substack instead - copy this link to read it 👇 https://substack.com/@mmcarpediem/note/p-160210983 If you followed along with the Muse’s Venus epithet challenge, you’ll encounter a lot of familiar names here! 😉 If not, read to the end because I have a special something for you… 🙃 Remember how the prize of the challenge was a free resource - ‘Venus - Adposita Multa Sua’, which is a guide to Venus’ many epithets? Well - you have another chance to get a free version of it while it’s still unpublished - and this time, it’s very easy… 😉 Just list all the places, dates and names of every depiction of Venus in Rome and Greece before 1766 and then put them in an Excel file… I’m kidding 😀 Just comment ‘Venus’ and I’ll DM it directly to you 😉 Utinam hoc tempus roris, ventiorum et vernum amorem, pacem et laetitam vobis ferat ❤️ Ad proximum!!

Salvete amici! Hodie est Idus Martii…the Ides of March ⚔️ A lot of you voted that you’d like to hear about the legacy of the Dictator Perpetuus this month…so what better day than today? 🙂 Years ago, I wrote an essay on the life and time of Julius Caesar - but I didn’t just want to give a dull outline of ‘what he did during his summer holidays’ 😜 I really dug deep and explained why every element of his remarkable life was so…remarkable Today I present you with the final result, slightly rewritten for Substack - either copy/paste this link or go to my story to read why the Romans hailed Gajus Julius as ‘the unconquerable god’ 👇🏻 https://open.substack.com/pub/mmcarpediem/p/julius-caesar-his-life-and-legacy?r=5bzh81&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=true I hope you enjoy reading as much as I enjoyed writing!! While Caesar isn’t someone I exactly idolize (as a Gaul, I still say ‘Vive Vercingétorix 😉), I find him fascinating…the duality of his personality, at times so cruel and at times so compassionate, compels me. Also, we share Cancer as one of our big 3 signs (him as Sun, me as Ascendant)! ♋ Who else has Cancer in their big 3 here?! (@astridsakdemi I know you do 🙂) Have you got any plans to celebrate today? Anyone eating Caesar salad? 🥗 😉 (the Muse is vegan, so she will not…) I hope that whatever you do today, you take a minute or two to remember one of the most iconic figures of Roman history 🌿 Ad proximum! ❤️

Salvete amici! Hodie est Kal. Martii - the first of March. In the days before Julius Caesar reformed the Roman calendar, it was New Year’s Day - so happy New Year! 🎉 For the Romans, March meant the beginning of campaigning season and festivities to prep for this ⚔️ So what are we going to be doing exactly? 🤔 It’s Mars’s birthday on the Kalends, celebrated by a city-wide procession by the Sallii - dancing armed priests who dress as archaic warriors and sing the Carmen Saliare (this isn’t the last we’ll see of them this month) 🕺🏼 We also celebrate the Matrionalia on the Kalends in honor of Juno Lucina - Mars’ mother 🤱🏻 On the 7th we will celebrate one of 3 yearly festivals held for Vedjovis - an Etruscan god whose role is rather obscure…he’s related to plagues and volcanoes, and is sometimes associated with Apollo 🏹 On the 9th is a dies religiosus (see the comments section for details! 👇). The Sallii carry the ancilia - 12 sacred shields kept in the temple of Mars, one of which (they say!) fell from the heavens during the reign of Numa Pompilius - around the city 🛡️ On the 14th is the second Equirria (the first one was on Feb. 27th) - a horse-racing festival for Mars 🐴 On the Ides are the feriae Jovis and the annual feast for Anna Perenna…and of course, the day we lost Julius Caesar 💔 On the 16-17 are one of the two yearly processions of the Argei. This is a unique and obscure festival worth looking into; the Muse will tell you more on the date, so stay tuned 🙂 On the 17th are the Liberalia in honor of Liber (also Liber Pater) - god of wine, viticulture, male fertility and freedom 🍇 We also celebrate the Agonalia for Mars (see the comments! 👇) On the 19th we will celebrate the Quinquatria - a five-day festival in honor of Minerva ⚔️ On the 23rd is the Tubilustrium - the war trumpets are purified and the Sallii make their appearance dancing through the streets again 🎺 On the 25th are the Hilaria - a two-week-long festival in honor of Cybele, an Anatolian Mother goddess 👩🏼 Finally, on the 31st is the anniversary of the Temple of Luna, the Moon goddess, on the Aventine 🌖 Phew..utinam hoc tempus solem, pacem et risum vobis ferat ❤️

Salvete amici! Tomorrow is Valentine’s Day…and the day when you get to show how much of all this you can remember! 💕 🧠 If you’ve been following the whole time, gratias plurimas tibi ago 😊 I hope it’s brightened your day to have a few words from the Muse pop up in your feed for the past 21 days… She knows she’s not usually this communicative, but it’s been a real pleasure for her to do this challenge and spend a few minutes, if virtually, with you each day all this past month 🙂 This is an interestingly complex aspect of Venus…not one shown much in popular culture! 🤔
