Join us on Tuesday 24 November for this artist talk by Seba Kayan, a Kurdish-Austrian electronic music composer, producer and lecturer based in Vienna. "Tuning Towards Listening: Decolonise Electronic Music" 👇👇👇 📍RHB 274 Goldsmiths Main Building
 📆 24 November 2026
⏰ 18:00 💸 Free Entry Through the lens of tuning and questions of listening, this lecture explores the cultural assumptions embedded in electronic music and its technologies. Drawing on sound studies, decolonial research and her own artistic practice, Seba Kayan examines how colonial power structures and Eurocentric narratives shape listening habits and perceptions of what sounds 'in tune'. Approaching listening as a culturally, historically and technologically situated practice, the lecture encourages audiences and practitioners to question what is often treated as musically universal or “correct” and invites them to move beyond the default settings of electronic music production. This talk has been made possible by funding from the Austrian Cultural Forum London More info 👇👇👇👇 www.sebakayan.com www.gold.ac.uk/events #electronicmusic #experimentalsound #orientaltechno #diasporicacid #djing #maqamimprovisation

Hackoustic 10: the live lineup Six hours of hacked, home-made and impossible instruments, live at IKLECTIK’s final weekend at Peckham Levels. Sunday 25 October, 16:00 – 22:00. 16:00 Tom Fox + Tim Yates Tom plays instruments from The Beating Birch, a world inside a gigantic singing birch tree, rebuilt as Bela-powered MIDI instruments that blend recorded audio with generative synthesis. Tim improvises alongside on found objects. 17:00 Craig Scott Craig Scott’s Lobotomy sits at the uncomfortable junction of human and machine. Live recordings are pulled apart, transformed by home-made noise devices and intricately rebuilt. 18:00 Jenn Kirby + Iris Garrelfs Jenn builds hybrid and wearable instruments from software, sensors and repurposed controllers, with work about the body and movement. Iris works between music, art and sociology through voice, installation and improvisation. 19:00 Alexandra Fierra: Demon Box The inventor of the Demon Box shares her latest sound experiments with it, and debuts some brand-new devices. 20:00 KOGG Selena Kay and Cerys Hogg combine contemporary composition and jazz improvisation with homemade instruments, field recordings and generative processes. IKLECTIK, Peckham Levels, 5th floor, 95a Rye Lane, SE15 4ST Part of IKLECTIKA 5th edition. Tickets on DICE, link in bio. Can’t make it? 🎓 NEWS (日本語は下に続きます） I’m excited to share that I’ve successfully defended my PhD thesis, ‘Takemitsu and the Steel Pavilion: Spatial Timbre as a Parameter of Composition’ at Goldsmiths, University of London! This practice-based research is about ‘spatial timbre’, the co-constitutive relationship between space and timbre, developed through Toru Takemitsu’s multichannel work at Expo 1970 in Osaka, and through my own surround sound installations and performances. I’ve been extraordinarily fortunate to be supported by so many amazing people on this journey. I am particularly grateful to my supervisors, Prof. John Drever @levackdrever and Prof. Holly Rogers, whose expertise and guidance have been instrumental in bringing this thesis to completion. Thank you to my examiners, Dr @iris.garrelfs and Prof. Simon Emmerson for such a rich and interesting viva discussion. Many thanks to the Arts & Humanities Research Council @ahrcpress /CHASE for funding this research. I am immensely grateful to all the musicians, composers, creative collaborators, and staff who have helped me complete this thesis. 📸: Visiting the Steel Pavilion in Osaka at the start of the research (2022), and now after the viva (2026)!
