After sending a total of 17 paintings this year there are now only three still available in New York. I’m so grateful to amazing human/gallerist Isabel Sullivan and her whole team, and also to all the collectors old and new. Send @is.gallery.nyc a message to enquire about the three paintings.

Wow! What an extravagant start to the Fall art season! More than 60 galleries had openings last night
with still more to come! The streets of Tribeca were packed, with crowds spilling out onto the streets. With the Summer heat stubbornly clinging on, some galleries felt like greenhouses with the amount of trapped heat inside from the throngs of people coupled with the frequent opening-closing of the doors, so I spent little time in those spaces (Not-so-fun-fact: extreme heat can trigger panic attacks for me). Many of the shows I saw I enjoyed, some of these requiring repeated visits. There were other shows I saw, but I did not photograph every single one as I realized I need to majorly clean up the storage on my phone (I eventually had a rude awakening upon receiving the notification to clean up my storage, thankfully I hadn’t yet emptied my trash, so that took care of a few gigabytes).

Let’s also not forget that gallery openings make for great social events as I caught up with a few people I haven’t seen in what felt like ages (probably a month or few weeks, realistically) and finally met a few artists who I have been following on Instagram for awhile!

What you see in this slideshow is a mere iota of the amount of art I saw, nevermind the true amount of work that is out in the city this very moment.

Most friends I saw last night all said the same thing to me: “You must be going crazy right now over all the galleries opening up again.” You’d better believe it! My Long Saturdays are going to be PACKED days for the foreseeable future!

Also, thank you so much to @janelombardgallery and @alejassanstudio for inviting me for an after-gallery dinner in celebration of Howard Smith and Karolina Maszkiewicz’s solo shows!

See you in Chelsea tonight

Yesterday I invite my dad to join me in my art travels before he went to work. With much to see in Chelsea right now, we covered quite a bit of ground. Below are the shows we saw:

1. “Leonora Carrington: Shape of Dreams” at L’Space Gallery
2. “Summer Wheat: Forbidden Fruit” at A Hug from the Art World
3. “Style Continuation” at ACA Galleries
4. Trudy Benson, Brian Alfred, and Elliott Green at Miles McEnery Gallery
5. A collections showcase at Guy Hepner Gallery @guyhepner
6. The “Jimothy” mural on 22nd Street
7. “Midsummer Dreams: Paula Paakkonen” plus a few Richard Hambleton and Cat Spilman highlights at Isabel Sullivan Gallery
8. “David Hockney: The Moon Room” at Pace Gallery
9. “Julian Schnabel: Italy Through Its Trees” at Pace Gallery
10. “Summer Highlights” at Hollis Taggart Gallery

My dad was swept off his feet by the Leonora Carrington show! Another important highlight for him were the Richard Hambleton paintings & prints we saw between ACA Galleries and Isabel Sullivan. This sparked a great conversation on street art. When my dad grew up in New York in the 1970s & 1980s, he said that he would see the graffiti tags and murals of Jean-Michel Basquiat, Keith Haring, and Hambleton in Brooklyn, Queens, and Manhattan. During his youth, he remembered watching the news reports on television and the criticisms leveled against graffiti as “vandalism” rather than “street art”. As a result, these images would disappear just as quickly as they arrived!

Tim from A Hug from the Art World gave us an extremely thorough explanation behind the artist Summer Wheat’s painting process. We came into her “Forbidden Fruit” show assuming that these were embroidered works, only to be taken aback upon learning that these are acrylic and gouache paintings that were meticulously arranged through a layered grid system that both allowed the paints to imprint and emerge, a push-pull or dance between surface and flatness.

So grateful for the few hours we got to spend together checking out the galleries! Love you so much, dad! ❀
