The moment we “try” to be authentic, we’ve already failed.

No matter how carefully I curate authenticity in my life, sometimes I need to strip down to my britches and run headlong into the deep, cold water.

Authenticity rests on the confidence that love is flowing downstream toward you, and that you, like a boulder, are taking the full weight of someone’s affirmation and affection as it crashes over you. So the question is: downstream from whose waters will you place yourself?

My boys remind me of this. They don’t “try” to be themselves; they simply are. No one has to teach them to live deliberately; they instinctively reach for the small miracles of life. They choose the ice cream with the most colors, and they never feel their time was wasted fishing with me for hours with nothing to show for it.

So take Thoreau’s words to heart: “I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately.” Find a forest and stay a few days. Turn off your phone and sit with your long-neglected friend, boredom. Put on a record and listen to it front to back with a glass of Barefoot. Love your family, and trust that God’s love runs like rapids you can’t escape (even when you don’t feel it). And today, may we all, as my wife says, “just try a little less and live a little more.”

In 2 Corinthians 1:3 the original word used for comfort or encouragement is paraklesis, meaning someone who is called alongside to help, strengthen, and walk with you in hard times.

Our God is the God who comes alongside us, helps us, strengthens us and walks with us in hard times and we, made in His image, are designed to do the same for others.

Let’s be people who put courage into others. There’s enough haters out there already. Or should I say, deflators??🤭

Maybe this is your reminder that God isn’t waiting for the perfect quiet moment to meet with you. He’s present in the middle of the noise, the interruptions, and the beautifully chaotic life He’s given you. ❤️

So take the interrupted prayer. Read the one verse. Sing the worship song with noise in the background. Refocus when you can.

I heard a story once of a dad who went fishing with his son. Years later after the father died, the son looked through the father’s journal it read, “ no fish caught. What a waste of time.”
The son had written in his own journal, “went fishing with my dad. Had the best day ever.”

Contrary to much thought, extravagance doesn’t equate “more love.” Many people spend a lot of money to pacify the people in their lives with a hollow sign of affection.

Much is said and even much more heard with the sacrifice of time.

Don’t overthink it. Schedule it and do it.

We are so easily formed by the pattern of the world—produce, achieve, accomplish, worry about it all—that we can forget how to simply be alive. We become slaves to our work, our striving, and ultimately to the patterns of sin that tell us our worth must be earned.

But Sabbath interrupts that pattern.

It teaches us to stop. To receive. To delight. To play. To notice beauty. To discover what makes our souls come alive.

Sabbath is the practice of freedom—the freedom Christ gives us to live not as slaves to our work or our sin, but as beloved children of God.
