The NNBA show in Coeur d'Alene was so much fun! The retro space theme and all our favorite vendors put on quite a show for us. Looking forward to next year!

We have not seen great fall color in eastern Iowa this year, but this Acer x pseudosieboldianum Ice Dragon is stealing the show today! Ice Dragon is a hybrid maple with the lacy look of a delicate Japanese maple, but it is tough enough to survive our sometimes brutal Iowa winters. The Ice Dragon growing in the conifer bed along the west side of our parking lot has sailed through three years in its exposed location with ease! Ice Dragon form a decorative, umbrella shaped small tree about 10 feet tall and 15 feet wide after about 10 years in the garden. The tree in the photo is available!

As a garden coach, when I am out with clients, evergreens are one of the things I’m asked for most. With our long stretch of cold weather here in Utah, it’s nice to have something green to enjoy when so much of the garden is dormant.

But when we need something that stays small, the choices get limited pretty quickly.

That’s why I love Little Gem Norway spruce. Its small size and naturally compact, cushion-like form bring evergreen texture into spots where a larger conifer wouldn’t fit.

@iselinursery lists its garden size at about 1 foot tall and 2 feet wide, with slow growth of 1–3 inches a year. It’s cold hardy to USDA Zone 3. It grows slowly, but over the decades it can exceed those dimensions a little.

While it’s listed for full sun, I’ve learned from growing it here in Utah (with our blazing sun) that it appreciates afternoon shade.

I love having these little pockets of green to enjoy through the colder months. 🌲

Save this for your next nursery trip, and follow along for help gardening with alkaline soil, hot summers, and cold winters.
