Beyond the Classroom was created to remind retired female teachers that their value, voice, and wellbeing still matter deeply.

Over the past few weeks, we’ve witnessed meaningful conversations, growth, and the power of simply being seen and supported in a new season of life.

We are seeking funding and partnerships to help us sustain this initiative and reach more retired female teachers who deserve wellness, community, and continued empowerment.

And just like that… we began 💛

Today marked the start of something truly special.
Our very first Beyond The Classroom session 🌿✨

In this space, incredible women who have spent years giving to others came together to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves and with each other.

There was warmth, openness, and a quiet kind of courage in simply showing up. And that, in itself, is something to celebrate 💛

This is only the beginning, and we’re so grateful to be walking this journey together 🌸

Answer to forgotten prayers,
A chance to bloom, to grow, to dare,
A place of stories yet untold,
Of mountains, springboks, and sunsets gold.

Months of challenge, months so sweet,
Of dreams to chase and friends to meet.
Laughter, tears, and memories strong,
Moments treasured that last so long.

A journey that taught me how to stand,
To face my fears and hold God’s hand.
To meet the shadows I tried to hide,
And let His light pour in deep inside.

I found out how hard it is to ask for help in time,
It sounds so simple, yet we often forget.
But this is the key along our journey,
To grow, to stand, and truly connect.

Discovering, walking, learning to see,
Who to include, who I’m called to be.
This journey of life keeps teaching me;
That serving is the truest liberty.

To expect the unexpected,
To find the joy that each day brings,
To serve with love, to truly live,
And pour out all I have to give.

To lead is more than to perform,
It’s loving others through the storm.
The call remains, though tasks may fade,
Love unconditional must be displayed.

Too often we accept the pain,
And call the chaos somehow “home.”
But hope still rises, soft and strong
To bring “heaven at home” where hearts belong.

If change is what we long to see,
It first must start inside of me.
Let’s stop to judge, and choose instead,
To change ourselves, be Spirit-led.

Jesus, our example bright,
The One we studied day and night,
Yet sometimes we forget His way,
Our pride steps in, and love decays.

Thank you, ALICT @itlalict , for all you gave,
Three months of growth that made me brave.

Braai, climbs, vineyards in view;
South Africa is lekker and hard to undo.
A family new, so warm, so kind,
That changed my walk, my heart, my mind.

After these months, I’m home again,
land I love, where my roots remain.
Trying now to do what I can,
re-connecting and growing in faith and time,
with people close, one step at a time.

The African Leadership Institute for Community Transformation (ALICT) is the first International Training program of its kind. By training innovative practitioners from all over the world, ALICT equips these innovative leaders to facilitate transformation as leaders serving different sectors and communities.

After its inception in 2004, the Genadendal Mission Museum was approached to host an annual short orientation program where these students are given the background history of the first mission station in South Africa,while participating in community work and museum projects.

One of my closest friends, Cyril Chavis Jr is doing an awesome work as the Campus Minister for Reformed University Fellowship (RUF) at Howard University. Together, Cyril and RUF have developed "Africana Manna" which is a podcast that intersects Christianity & the African Diaspora.

Specifically their podcast allows speakers to honor a Christian ancestor and their contribution to the world, allowing them to speak into the present context.

Intersecting Christianity and Organizational Leadership, I chose to honor the late Mr. Stan Henkeman, who I encountered as a student of the African Leadership Institute for Community Transformation (ALICT) in Wellington, South Africa. Mr. Stan forever changed my life and I'm grateful.
