August’s Story |

Our daughter August unexpectedly died in early labour after a perfect and healthy pregnancy at 41 weeks and 1 day.
We were so excited to go into hospital after 12 hours of painful contractions, safe in the knowledge we would finally meet our baby. Because of Covid, Liam couldn’t come into the maternity unit with me so after two trips in and out, I was finally kept in and Liam was sent home to wait. My waters broke on the way out of the house the second time but the midwife dismissed this after a quick examination, gave me some pain relief, checked the baby's heartbeat and left me to rest. After an hour the midwife came to check up on us but was having some issues with the heartbeat doppler so I was put in a wheelchair and hastily taken to have a scan. I was asked to ring Liam to come in and I started to panic. The consultant called the most senior person on the ward to come and everything began to seem a bit frantic. Doctors and midwives were in and out and I was then surrounded. After some more frenetic scanning he turned the scan screen to me and said the words no one should ever have to hear. ‘I’m so sorry but your baby has died’
2 months down the line we now know that what I thought was my waters breaking, was in fact a water leak ( this had been totally dismissed by the midwife) & the undiagnosed infection I carried was able to reach August. She passed away within the hour.
My whole world collapsed in that moment.
I could hardly breathe. I had come into hospital to give birth and take our baby home. Now I was alone and hysterical in a delivery suite and my baby had died.
The wait for Liam to get to hospital seemed like eternity . Then came a flurry of more tears, anger, despair and Liam having to ring and tell our families. To be honest I was so confused and high on the pain relief I didn’t really know what was going on. I had to try and to sleep through the contractions because I knew I still had to go through childbirth...we had a long night ahead of us.
12 painful hours later I delivered our amazing beautiful baby girl August Mary Jane Weekes, 7.11lbs and perfect in every way. @itsallaboutaugust

For all English speaking followers: special campaign “Baby Loss Remembrance Month October” by Himmelskind!

The association Himmelskind in Zurich (acute support and grief counselling for early child loss, where I volunteer), has launched a great campaign for the month of October to commemorate the childs we lost: a T-shirt bearing the name of your child designed by @himmelskind_trauerbegleitung

How does it work?
We provide two different templates free of charge. One is a hand-painted star with the handwritten name (template 1, "Eleni") and the other is a hand-painted star-heart with the name written in script font (template 2, "Stian"). Both templates are black.

So be part of it,
- send an e-mail to beate@himmelskind.ch and tell me
- which template you prefer.

Afterwards, we create your very own personal PNG (graphic format), which you can use to order the textile product of your choice from an online shop.

Spread the word with @spreadshirt: 15% discount:
@spreadshirt grants all contributors a 15% discount from now until 15 November 2021 with the code "HIMMELSKIND21". The discount does not apply to gift vouchers and can be used on up to two products per order. You can click on the following page to design your own shirt: https://www.spreadshirt.ch/selbst-gestalten
The geo-location allows users e.g. from Germany or UK to access the appropriate country version (.de version oder co.uk version, but ist only works in Europe).

When going through loss we sometimes just want to hear that what we’re feeling emotionally and physically is “normal” from someone who isn’t a medical professional. Someone who has gone through it. We’ve gone through trauma & the last thing we want is for the wrong thing to happen during pregnancy, to go wrong. We don’t want to leave the safe haven of our homes so we question every bit of bleeding. Every twinge of pain. Everything. ⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣
So, we have compiled a list of podcasts and episodes for you to listen to on your healing or trying again journey to try and make you feel a little less alone. Make you feel a bit more settled and calm while you’re recovering. ⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣
Podcasts are amazing to listen to if you want that little bit of “self help” but also don’t want the whole world to know. It’s a bit more subtle than a book cover! ⁣⁣⁣
.⁣⁣⁣
As always, don’t forget to share your favourites in the comments. You could even share a snap of you listening to your favourite podcast, your listening essentials or where you like to listen with #thebigfatmword. ⁣⁣⁣

Day 4 of 7 days 7 stories🌈

Today’s story comes in the form of a podcast episode🎧

This week I was joined by Louisa Harris, the lady behind the account @itsallaboutaugust 🤍

Louisa and her partner Liam sadly lost their baby girl August to Group B Strep, resulting in Louisa delivering August stillborn at 41 weeks.

We recorded this episode 4 months to the date of August's birth. I sat in absolute awe as Louisa so bravely shared her story with me at my dinner table. Louisa set up her instagram page to raise awareness of group B strep and stillbirth.

For those that don't know, strep B is not routinely checked for in a pregnancy unless detected in other tests such as urine samples. Yet it can be so life threatening to baby. August would be here today if it was picked up and Louisa was prescribed an £11 antibiotic. The injustice of it all is something I have no words for.

Since Louisa has shared her story online, she has motivated expectant mums to push to get tested for strep B. Some stating that they tested positive for it and are so thankful that they went and got checked.

Louisa, amongst all of her grief hopes that sharing her story will prevent something like this happening again. A true wonderwoman. I can’t thank you enough for sharing it with me✨

And for August, wherever you may be little darling angel, I hope you know that you are changing the world. Your Mummy and Daddy are making sure of it, Rest easy🌟

Listen to wherever you get your podcast fix such as @apple_podcasts @spotifypodcasts and @googlepodcast !
