Another epic Sunday for DDRC. First run in the 40s and the lads aren’t slowing down. Two weeks until the @nycmarathon and we added some elevation today over the Brooklyn Bridge. Great job dads!

Huge thank you to @completeplayground for the coffee, pastries and a morning we will remember for a long time. Parenting is hard but today it was so fun. Can’t wait for the next one!

I heard a baby screaming on the subway yesterday, and surprisingly my first thought wasn’t, “Man, that kid is loud.”

I was thinking about my kids. Are they okay? Is somebody crying? Am I missing something? Meanwhile, they’re probably home eating snacks and arguing over the “good cup.”

That’s parenthood for me lately. When I’m at work, I feel guilty I’m not home. When I’m home, part of my brain is thinking about work. When I’m running, I wonder if I should be with my kids. When I skip a run, I feel guilty that I’m not doing the thing that makes me feel better.

I want to be a better runner, a smarter individual. Healthier, stronger, more successful.

But more than any of it, I want to be a great husband and a great dad.

Some days I genuinely wonder how the hell you’re supposed to be all of those things at the same time. There are moments when I’m taking a video of myself and I think:

“My kids are at home and I’m out here filming myself running past my phone for the 4th time. What an ass.”

But I’m slowly realizing being a good parent doesn’t mean giving up every piece of yourself. I actually think our kids need to see us have things we love.

Hobbies, goals, friends, ridiculous dreams. Things that challenge us. Things that have absolutely nothing to do with being “Mom” or “Dad.”

One day I want my kids to chase something they care about too. When they do, I don’t want them feeling guilty for it.

So maybe the goal isn’t being everywhere. Maybe it’s being where your feet are. When I’m running, run. When I’m working, work. And when I walk through that door at home, put the phone down and be great Dad.

I’m incredibly lucky to have a family that supports the things I’m chasing. None of this works without them.

And to every parent who constantly feels like they should be doing more: More time with the kids, work, exercise, cooking, cleaning, everything.

Your kids probably aren’t keeping the same score you are. Keep chasing the things that make you feel alive. Then come home, and be there. That just might be enough.

And if anyone figures out how to do all of this without feeling guilty, please let us know!

Ever upward!
