POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Someday I will republish this review. The background will be the sea. Better if it it is the Gulf of Mexico. And I am in somewhere near New Orleans.

Controversial when first published, The Awakening (1899) is now widely regarded as part of the canon of Feminist Literature. Here Kate Chopin describes, using language and imagery recognized as a progenitor of Southern Gothic, the awareness that comes to a woman freed from the mental hold of domesticity and conformity. A woman, a wife, a mother, upon realizing she is free, property of no one, beholden to nobody or nothing, is suddenly presented with a range of options, of possibilities. She is free to act the way she pleases. She is free to pursue her own course, chart her own destiny. She is free to seek her own idea of happiness. She is free to choose whom to love; she can even choose not to. She is free to do what she wants to do, and be whoever she wants to be.

Sadly the world, Kate Chopin’s world, did not seem to be ready for the kind of freedom that The Awakening espouses. A century two decades and four years hence and the same issues prevalent in Kate Chopin’s time remain extant in some form or another: though great strides have been made toward advancing the case of women’s liberation, society is still hounded by questions of what is moral, what is proper, what is decent. Women remain burdened with expectations. Women are still tied to notions, norms, and mores formulated primarily by men. So it should not come as a surprise, ever, if any woman repressed, suppressed, oppressed by these limiting, inhibiting, and pernicious expectations suddenly decide to venture far out away to the middle of the ocean, never to return to shore. I never want to see such an event— an act of defiance, of freedom, of self-expression, which requires much conviction, tinged forever by a sparkling of hopelessness and surrender. But I will not judge anyone who chooses to do so.

It mustn’t be so.

The ever-lovely @thelostlibrary tagged me to answer some #bookishquestions!

🍃 Genre I tend to stay away from?
Horror - I don’t do anything that is remotely scary. I don’t read a lot of Sci-fi either, but I’m not opposed to it - I just don’t reach for it generally, or have the commitment to start.

🍃 Worst habit as a reader?
When I was younger, I used to read in the car all the time, or late into the night without a lot of light. My parents yelled at me all the time about how bad that was for my eyes.

🍃 Do I read the synopsis?
In a bookstore, if something catches my eye. Otherwise, not really. I’ve recently enjoyed going into books and movies blind.

🍃 Favorite book from last year?
My mental health was all over the place, and so were the books I read, lol. The ones that stuck with me the most are: Pachinko, Know My Name, Upstream, Chain of Iron, Whereas, Howl’s Moving Castle, Swimming in the Dark, Whereabouts, and my proper reread of LOTR.

🍃 Do I read used books?
If I buy a book, I generally try to buy them secondhand, if I can.

🍃 Favorite classic?
Giovanni’s Room by James Baldwin and Persuasion by Miss Jane were the first to pop into my mind.

🍃 Books I always recommend?
The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien, Know My Name by Chanel Miller, and The Book Thief.

🍃 Books I didn’t like?
A lot, probably, but if I don’t have constructive criticism, they don’t stick out in my mind. A bunch of historical romances / contemporary romances, I’m sure.

🍃 Current reads?
Emma by Jane Austen (for a book club), I’m about to start The Dutch House, and I’m (finally!) making progress in The Count of Monte Cristo.

🍃 Books I look forward to reading?
So many! White Tears / Brown Scars has intrigued me for quite a while, and I can’t wait for Chain of Thorns (my friends & I are going to have a ball with that one).

🍃 Books I’m ashamed I haven’t read yet?
Nothing, really. It’s a big world, and there are so many stories left to read! And if I do want to read something, I will eventually get to it.

Feel free to join in the tag, whether or not I tagged you!
