I sat through dozens of my wife’s cancer appointments. Not once did anyone ask how I was doing. My question to caregivers: when did a doctor last ask how YOU were doing?

Four days before she died, Dolly Parton told People she was dealing with health issues she “just didn’t pay attention to when I was watching over Carl.” If Dolly Parton, with every resource in the world, could let her own health slide while caring for someone she loved, anyone can.

I wrote about her in TIME and argued that we should start treating caregiving like a diagnosis. Not because caregivers are "sick", but because the healthcare system should finally see the person sitting next to the patient.

The essay went VIRAL. And it inspired an entire episode of the Tamron Hall show: “Caregiving: A New Diagnosis?”

I’m honored to be part of it alongside Yvette Nicole Brown, Faith Hill, Dr. Helen Ouyang, Jerri McElroy and Rimbatara “Neo” Neomardhika.

It airs Friday, Oct. 16 on TV and YouTube.

What have YOU let slide while watching over someone you love? And what do YOU think we should do to support caregivers?
