“We are the ones who will save us” - June Jordan, A Poem for South African Women

On this 4th anniversary of the Dobbs decision there is a lot to reflect on in light of each state now having its own patchwork of laws which now mean the level of reproductive healthcare you receive depends on the zip code in which you live.

With the loss of federal protections for abortion access when Roe v Wade was overturned, it’s important to look at the impact of this Supreme Court decision:

- An INCREASE in the number of abortions since 2022;
- An increase in maternal care deserts, especially throughout the South;
- An increase of women dying preventable deaths while suffering obstetric emergencies, due to doctors’ fear of providing timely reproductive care in ban states.

To commemorate 4 years since the loss of Roe, I chose to do the things I do best - build community and share stories through film + media. I recently held a screening with @itsLAGRH of my short award-winning animated documentary “Someone You Know”, where 3 women share their stories having to navigate a hostile landscape to access abortion care later in their pregnancies. In a panel discussion I moderated after, I asked UCLA professor and @uclaBixby Center for Sexual Health director Dr. Jessica Gipson, sexual health educator and perinatal mental health expert Janelle Watson @justembracewellness, and @cacoalition4rf Executive Director Sylvia Castillo what each of us can do to make a difference right now.

key takeaways:
1) stay informed and share knowledge with people we love and care about, so they know how to advocate for themselves
2) vote for candidates champion bills that protect reproductive freedom.
3) stay plugged into our community. Because although political leadership often fails to protect us and pushing back against harmful policies seems hopeless, when we show up for one another in small, everyday ways, we remind ourselves and each other of the power we have to make a difference.

I’m thankful for the privilege to share stories in film and media, knowing that it makes others feel less alone.

MIDNIGHT COWBOY RADIO plays at The Actors Company June 19-21. This is a dark comedy/ political satire, following a late night, conservative radio-talk-show-host giving local callers in Kentucky unfounded life advice on-the-air, while arranging an illegal abortion off-the-air. The audience watches both stories unravel over one wild night of radio!📻

Incredible night supporting @itslagrh and ensuring people get the reproductive care they need. Over 70% of Americans want abortion care to stay legal and available. Let’s vote to make it so!
Much gratitude to my co-emcee @wendiemalick and all the comics who showed up, including my hero @larrywilmore and DJ @wyldeflower and our mama @wendyjoysworld for bringing us all together. Let’s stay loud and proud— we are not going back.🙏
